I hate it when people do that!!! I've lived in Utah pretty much all my life, but my mom was born in SC, and grew up in GA, so i speak some words the ''wrong way'', which its not. its totally normal. So try to not mind their immature jokes, i know its hard, ive been down this road, and all i have for adivce is to joke, or throw them off....

It is drawl. Southern d-r-a-w-l.
To answer: people wrongly associate it with backwardness and lack of education.
But as William Faulkner, Lyndon Baines Johnson and Ladybird, Leontyne Price, Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Al and Tipper Gore, Andrew Young, ML and Coretta Scott King, Gladys Knight, John Edwards, etc. not to mention General Robert E. Lee, who was anything but uneducated, proved, how wrong people can be!!!! Many of the leaders mentioned were/are popular and got elected or had their music/literature praised. Beneath all the bluff and stupid talk, people know. So just grin and bear it. Soon, they'll appreciate you for being you!!!!!

I was born and raised in Georgia and still live here, although I have lived abroad and in other states outside of the South. Some Southerners speak with a drawl that even I find annoying. Then again, when I lived in Boston, I found the way some Bostonians speak to be even more annoying. Obviously, it's just something personal since there are others who would disagree with me and probably would say I speak "fuh-knee".

Same reason people thought the voices in Fargo were odd, or when people fromCalifornia get laughed at when they say "hella" or "hecka". People laugh at anything that is not familiar to them.
I'm guessing that if you live in Michigan long enough, your accent will start to soften, like how many Irish immigrants lost much of their accents. As for your particulars, people with a southern drawl tend to talk slowly, the same way many mexicans talk ectremely fast. Maybe that would help?

I'm absolutely positive your "Southern drawl" (and perhaps your poor grammar and spelling) are what the Michigan people are noticing.
People make fun of things they don't understand or things that are new to them. It is a sign of provincialism. (PRO-VINCH-UL-IZ-EM.) That means they are "hicks" who have very little experence with anyone outside of their sad little worlds. It reflects badly on them, not on you. You have moved outside your comfort zone and are braving a new place with new people, new culture, and new interests. Be proud of yourself for being brave and figuring out how to bloom where you are planted.
I have lived in 11 states. Some northern people think (really) that southerners are dumb, just because we talk slower than they do, and have more relaxed way of expressing ourselves. Educate yourself so you can be as smart and deserving of respect as they are. Be patient with them, and in no time you will be able to understand each other. You might try having a sense of humor about it. Good luck.

I have been accussed of having a southern accent since I was a little girl, and I had never lived in the south till I was grown. I think they are jealous...no we do have a southern drawl like you said, but most people can understand us just fine, they crack a smile or make fun but they can tell what we are saying. In different parts of the country they all have different ways of saying certain things...put on your prettiest Scarlett O'Hara smile and tell to take the cotton out of their ears......God bless....
