You're going to have to provide more information on where you are living for anyone to give you a good answer. I've lived in both the city and very rural areas. In the cities, I bathed using faucet water and drank mostly bottled water, which you can get delivered to your house for cheap. In the rural areas, I bathed in water from a well (this was maybe 7 years back, this place has running water now). I drank the same water after it was boiled. On a side note, don't drink water if it has been left out if you're in a rural area. There tends to be more germs in the air due to all the farm animals and whatnot.

I'M CHINESE!!! lol. And I've been there a few times.

I don't know if it's that dirty, but certainly not clean enough to drink straight out of the faucet. You can bathe in it fine. You can also boil the water if you're gonna drink it. Most people just buy bottled water or those large water dispensers that come from bottled water companies.

THIS APPLIES TO SHANGHAI AND BEIJING, WHICH ARE CITY AREAS. I CAN'T REALLY SPEAK FOR THE RURAL AREAS.

The water is extremely polluted in China which is why you cannot drink it. It is due mostly to industry I think as well as the use of improper piping through buildings.

You can get bottled water anywhere on the street for very cheap. Also, most hotels will leave a bottle of boiled tap water in your room every morning. You can also boil the tap water for two minutes to make it clean.

If you buy bottled water on the street, make sure the cap is sealed. Some people will refill empty bottles with tap water and try to resell it.

Make sure you get your vaccines before going to China, so if you do get some water in your mouth you won't get Hep A.
