how do you find out if someone really graduated from a college if you don't believe them?

Call the registrar's office of the school they said that they graduated from to verify. (You may need a reason, such as being a potential employer).

Ask them who their advisor was and the name of the administraion building.

Just ask them for proof and if they refuse to show you proof you can assume they are lying.
