I have real issues when deciding ....

When is a wood a forest?
when is a pond a lake?
when is a boat a ship?

If you go to the wikipedia (encyclopedia on the web) links below, it does try to differentiate the words from the others you list. When looking up forest, you will see it differentiates the word from woodlands (which would be what "a wood" would be short for). Good luck.

when you can get lost in the woods theyre considered a forest
when you cant touch the mud, the pond is a lake
when theres more than 15 people on a boat...its considered a ship.....hope i helped

A ship's a ship.
What's the confusion.
One is not the other.
