I attend a Calvary Chapel church. My pastor answered that question about a couple of years ago. He said, he has no interest in what people give or where they give.

Our particular church would not say anything, however, I think scripturally that you need to primarily give to where you are being ministered at and then any extra go to a favorite charity. I worked on a church board for awhile and I can tell you that all those people who felt they had to give to a charity or some homeless person on the street rather than to the church had no clue as to how the electric, gas, water, salaries, janitor were being paid and were the first ones to complain when things weren't to their liking at the church. No ministry runs for free. If you don't agree with your church's mission or policies, then go to another church that you do agree with and pay your tithes there. Not trying to sound cynical but there are so many people today who try to ease their consciences by not giving their tithe so they can give a little to a charity and then spend the rest on theirselves. It is a discipline and people today hate discipline. I found out years ago, you can NOT outgive God. I've been tithing (from the gross) for 35 years and I've been blessed in so many ways it is unbelievable and God has never not come through for me when there was a need. I said need, not all our wants. Hoped this helps.

Funny, I did that with a church I used to be a part of and the pastor 'subtlely told all the church not to have association with me. After a while I noticed it and after a tithe's and offering, I went to the front and said.
1. This church is a multimillion $$ establishment. You're debts are paid off.
2. It's not like I'm being stingy with the money.
3. Why are you so angry? Let God deal with me!!
They all were so embarrassed!!
but the church I attend now only ask for when they have a youth or childrens summer program/retreat. And you can tell where the money's going!!!

That's a good question. You know the in the bible God says to render unto Caesar what it Caesar's and unto God what is God's. I don't know that he meant that you tithe had to go to the church per say, he just meant that 10% of what you make is to go to the Lord. Most of the money back then was used to support missionaries, etc. In modern times though I would imagine that the church leaders would be upset. I give my tithe to the church and my gifts(money I give beyond my tithe) to other organizations, like Salvation Army, or March of Dimes, I also give to people who just need help.
Hope that answers your question.

The bible tells us to give our money back to God...it's not really ours to start with! And to give to our local congregation in Pauls day he was supported by the local congregation he was ministering to as was the community. The majority of churches support charities, missionaries etc from their congregational support and budget. By supporting your local congregation you are supporting your local community through the church and the continual reaching of the lost with the word of God. If you get extra money over and about your regular tithe then there is nothing wrong with giving it to a good cause or adopting a child through world vision or www.gfa.org etc. Do not stop giving to your local congregation though.

the church is the house of the Lord where his people dwell to praise and worship. Were the lost and confuse go,it is a place to find comfort in the arms of the Lord. The church is where the body of christ are. We are to support our churchs because they bring people to God. I give to my church. I love my church. Jesus loved the church. this is a good site about tithing check it out.

Well, you need to understand the difference between tithing and charitable donations.

The bible says you pay your tithes and offerings to the church not to charity. So if you are sending money to a charity ( which is a good thing) it is called a donation and you are not paying your tithing's

i think the charity should be something that futhers God's kingdom. like when i start getting paid for teaching here soon, i'm going to give $25 a month to casa de comdeia (i think i spelled that rgith) and i'm gonna count that as part of my tithing.

huntjames32,
Do you seek to please man, or do you seek to please God?
If they have any character at all, they would not say a thing, but the bible states we are to give 10 percent to Jesus- this goes toward ministry. To the church- the church ministers back to us. What is your standard? Your convictions? We are go give yes, after your 10 percent, you can give to whatever you want!! We need to obey and seek to please God first of all.
