I adopted a 7 week old kitten two weeks ago and a few days agoI notice she was scratching a lot, so I gave her a flea bath. While I was bathing her I saw numerous fleas run across her face. I was not expecting that and it worried me that although she is treated, my carpet and furniture may also need to be treated since she has been there for two weeks. I have small children and I don't want the fleas biting them or me. Please help...my husband didn't want the cat and he is waiting for an excuse to get rid of her!

Get some flea powder from the grocery store, it works nicely. After you get the fleas off your kitten and out of your house you shouldn't have to worry about them anymore. But, if your kitten has ingested any fleas, he may have gotten worms. It sounds gross, but keep an eye on his feces for a little while. You don't want your kitten to have worms...yuck.

I would definately reccommend treating your carpet and furniture. You can do it one of two ways...have an exterminator spray & bomb the house, and you want to spray outside also. From that day on and for five more days you will need to vaccuum every day and replace the bag after each time you vaccuum to make sure you get every last flea and any eggs.....OR you can have someone come over and professionally deep clean your carpets and furniture. You will still need to have a professional come over and spray, and you will still have to do the vaccuum thing as well. Make sure you take the kitten to the vet and have her treated for fleas & bathed the SAME day you have your house treated. From there on get on a good flea prevention like, Revolution, Advantix, your vet will suggest a good for you.

We have dogs, and they are indoors, but one summer we had fleas, and I never thought we would be rid of them. I opted for my #2 suggestion, because I had them deep clean the carpets and furniture, then three hours later the pest company came over and sprayed all over, bombed the indoors, and treated the outside. By 5pm, I picked up the dogs who had been bathed and treated for fleas, and the house was back to normal. Vaccuuming every day and changing the bag everyday was a pain, but I didn't have anymore fleas.

You can also ask your vet to treat your kitty with Capstar, it will kill any living flea on her, but it is not to be used as a preventative.

I used to work for Terminix, so that's how I knew all about what to have the pest company do, and the vaccumming, but whoever you choose should tell you the same, if they do not, then they are only looking to get more money out of you.

Its the ignorant people like JENNY, who are the cause of there being an over population with cats!!

Since we are at the peak of flea season, the best thing for you to do is get some advantage from your Vet. its a once a month application, just dont let the kids touch the cat till the application has dried completely. This kills the fleas & the cycle. (I use it only in the summer time)

Ask your Vet about any other treatment, and tell your hub to chill, his bark is probably bigger than his bite!!! You are doing a good thing in giving a kitty a home.. Once you have him or her spayed or neutered, you will have many years of faithful companionship & love!

By all means treat everything she has been in contact with. I've found that the best way is to use a whole house fogger but that may be inconvenient for you. There are many good commercial product available in the pet stores for ridding your home of fleas. Be very careful about what you use on your kitten though, some products are not to be used on very young animals.

If you are going to let her be an indoor/outdoor pet, she will need to be treated with drops every 30 days.

you can bomb the house with a fogger, just follow the directions and make sure everyone including the animals are out of the house.

Or you can just vacuume and keep things clean, fleas do best when undisturbed, if you clean a lot they cant breed. Vacuuming is the best way to get rid of them.

A fogger is another great way. in a few hours you can have everything cleaned back up and put together and you're husband wont even know it happened while he was at work :)

Go to the hardware store and buy flea bombs. Close all the windows in the house and set off the cans. You need to be out of the house for a few hours, but they work.

find someone with a banana tree and ask then to give you a chunk of it.Cut it into small pieces ( about an inch thick )
Hide it where there are fleas. Promise they will go away. Not sure how it works, but it does !
