that's how chinese people are, get used it. They huddle in groups and exclude everyone else more than any other race/nationality out there.

I didn't bother with your question earlier because i thought that it was silly. You want their attention then learn Chinese. This has already been suggested to you and I have the feeling that you may feel that it is an extreme measure. You get down some good (and polite) quips in Chinese and you will have them all over you for your attention. You must be able to pronounce them correctly which is a little work and of course, you need to understand what they are saying... then you toss them out like you've been speaking it forever. And, let it go.
Other than that I have no idea what is going to make them take note of you; I would not hit or slap anyone. Maybe I am thinking now how it is going to take to learn Chinese to the extent you would need and your problem should be over before you could do that. So, just ignore them (politely -- my Chinese teacher said that you can never be too polite!)

I have spent most of my time in halls so i know how you feel. When i lived in a hostel for international students most of the people i shared with where Chinese or Korean and when i was at university 95% of the people in my house where too. Take a step back and try not to think its because your not the same ask them about their cultural background, what they like doing. I usually approached people by saying i would really like to learn their language so i could have more conversations with them ( only if language was a problem) whichever way you choose to approach it SHOW INTEREST AND RESPECT especially with different cultures religion etc.. you will learn a lot and gain good friends

My Chinese flatmate was like that, she did an MSc and after a year her very poor English hardly improved because she only socialised with other Chinese people (totally different with Chinese from Hong Kong and Malaysia). If your only problem is that they don't socialise you might point out to them that their English needs improving and they should socialise more. If they are being obnoxious as well, then maybe pointing out their behaviour politely will help, as people from Asia don't seem to be as yobbish in general. But if all else fails, slap them, as they are probably smaller than you anyway.

Probably their English isn't as good as they would like so it is easier for them to stick with their own. You don't say what you mean when you say they are "very anti social" . If there are a group of you why don't you try approaching them - ask which part of china they are from - find out more about their country so that you have something to talk about.

I wouldn't just label it to the chinese, even though it is very true. tbh, I find it a little annoying and very antisocial. Note: the following can sound harsh, so if you do not want to find out, turn away now If language was not a barrier, you will then have that cultural barrier to contend with. It's not the fact that they don't understand, it's just they refuse to understand. In a way you can understand that: you're in a country where it is completely different to that you were brought up in with people you are so used to. If you had lived in a particular village where you were brought up with strict traditions where you believe parents are gods, religion is of upmost importance, your impression on the neighbours and peers/your social status is currency, your children's goals and results in life are your possessions/gives you social status, things will be difficult for you to adapt in a foreign world where every rule you have picked up is violated. Law and rules depend on the village mayor/cheif, where rules can be bent and people can get away with things. There are no defined boundaries, no system, lack of proper education and no formalities. The lifestyle there would be like trying to get away with anything you can. It's like a redneck moving to a city (not suggesting anything about intelligence). In short, the people would be: narrow minded arrogant - suggesting they are right all the time or their experience teaches them more about life than education does disorganised uncertain ambiguous uneducated about anything in the foreign world have no-one similar to associate with can't/won't fit in socially Unfortunately, as the parents only know how to bring up children by how they were brought up themselves, the children would be forced to be brought up in a similar environment, at least for the immediate generation anyway. The good news is that after 2 or so generations, the kids of the future would be a lot more open minded and would be able to mesh in with the community more. Even now, the 2nd generations are integrating into foreign societies more easily because of cultural changes and foreign countries being open accommodating to different cultures. It would be nice if more of the other countries do the same. Another thing is that as communication is becoming more globalised, democratic systems are being used more in foreign countries. This means China will have adopted a system that is very similar to every other country. Furthermore, isolated rural areas are being more integrated with cities and use of such systems. This means that culture and choice of culture is becoming more universal so youngsters from China would have a better chance of integrating with other people around the world now than before. Just to be fair, there are some who do integrate easily - I wouldn't say every Chinese is like that, after all you're posing a generalisation. These people tend to have an educational background similar to that of the West. So professionals and their immediate families would be very susceptible to local communities, whilst people who lack any definite education might not be. It would be nice to see other Chinese taking part in local communities more. I just hope years of tradition has not blunted their ability to respect or associate themselves with local communities. Btw, just to note: only ethnic minorities who grew up in rural parts of their home country are inclined to eat pets, isolate themselves from local communities, force their kids to marry based on racial similarities or traditions, etc. That is, unless they change their attitude over time. Everyone else is not like that (I hope). Films I recommend watching about this: My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Bend It Like Beckham.

dont take it personally-they have the right not to be sociable with you, as you do with anyone else..
my best friend from the age of 11, is chinese.
she is more loyal,caring,intelligent,hard-working and wise than anyone I know.
I have had the honour of being invited to her fathers 80th birthday party and a traditional family wedding banquet, as the only western person,...
stop moaning about them and do something generous in the interest of anglo-chinese relations...
ok, just read your answer about the thai-bride, you are rascist and given that why would anyone want to socialise with you ????

Anti-social? Use the correct term, unless you really think they are irritable, aggressive, impulsive, and violent. Maybe they're just shy. Maybe they prefer to be with people that are like them, who can speak their language. Or maybe they're just elitists. If you really want to talk to them, then you could start the conversatino with them, instead of waiting for them to come speak to you.

Sing the "East Is Red" to befriend them. Here are the Chinese lyrics transliterated into pinyin English...
"mayo gong chan dang, mayo shin zhongua
mayo gong chang dang de mayo shin zhonghua"
That roughly translates as "No Communism - No China!
