I think I would only get seriously irritated if it were someone that was exceptionally close to me...and I were pregnant at the time... and my friend/family member wasn't yet.
However, if you're planning to have your baby "someday" (i.e., 5 years from now), I don't think it would be fair for you to "hold" that name till then. Also, why is it taboo to name two kids the same name? If that were the case, we wouldn't have so many Jr's running around!
Personally, I kind of think it's the same as getting mad because you're having a wedding on your friend's kid's birthday or something... Silly, and really not relevant in the grander scheme of things.

Unless you created a new name never used by anyone, I would have to state that it would be impossible to chose a name that no one has ever used. That could have been the name they wanted but had never mentioned it, as they may have feared some one would take it first. In your case if this was true, what option would they have had, in picking the name they had privately chosen, and now faced with the knowledge you chose the same name? Most names have variants, and perhaps you can improve on the name.
Unless the other child has the same last name. . .I do not see a problem in keeping with the name you have chosen. After all, it's not when or how you thought of it, it's what you wanted and can still have. . .it's a name your child will be using for the rest of their lives. It seems that you simply have the same taste in names and that is something that should be thought of as a commonality. . not something to divide. . .

I was in a similar situation. I was pregnant the at the same time as my first cousin and I had my baby before she did. I named my son after my father and when she had her baby, she named her baby the same thing. I'm still mad about it and it's been almost 8 years. I feel as if I had every right to name my baby after my father and she should've named her baby after her father instead of mine.

Depending on how close they are, yes I would be mad. If they were close enough that it would be weird to both have the name, they shouldn't have taken it. If they're not that close, both use the name!
Have you seen the episode of Seinfeld with this premise? George wants to name a child "Seven" and is enraged with his friends who "steal" the name. They are in the car racing to the hospital and he's still trying to talk them out of it. Very funny.

Only if this is a person I would be seeing a lot like a family member or best friend. Especially if it's a rare name and I made a point to say I would be using it.

It depends on how close I was to that person. If they were a good friend or someone I had to see everyday I would be pretty angry with them. A true friend would have had better judgement then to use the name that you loved and wanted to name your own child.

As a guy, I don't see the harm in it. If the person taking
the name you picked was a good friend, it may make the
process of identifying your kids later in life difficult if they're
friends as well - But this doesn't seem to be something
to lose sleep over.

Yes, but it is kinda like you named the baby. I wouldn't share anymore baby names with them though.

yes, I had something similar happen to me, but I named my child a name and then my 1st cousin named her child the same thing, then my second child was born and my other 1st cousin named her child the same thing. So, now at family dinners or parties, we have 4 children with the same names. Really hurt my feelings.

Kids are going to have the same names. Just name your baby what you want.
I teach, and every class has at least one, and sometimes duplicates, of the names Kimberly, Ashley, and Jennifer.
