Don't believe the comments about Scion having no track record. Scion is a division of Toyota created specifically for youth buyers in the United States. The xB actually *is* a Toyota vehicle--it's been sold in Japan for several years as the bB ("Black Box").

In fact, the xB and Yaris are built on the same platform--it also underpins the Scion xA--and share powertrain and suspension components.

However, these vehicles feel very different to drive. For starters, the xB does not feel nearly as small from the driver's seat. You sit up fairly high, and the view out of the large windshield resembles that of a minivan. The Yaris feels like what it is--a small car. Your personal preferences will dictate which is more appealing.

In terms of driving dynamics, though, the xB has a clear upper hand. Its steering is firmer and more precise, its manual shifter (if you prefer stick) is much crisper, and its suspension tuning is stiffer, making it more fun to drive on curvy roads. The Yaris, by contrast, suffers from fairly vague and mushy controls. Its only real advantage is that it rides more smoothly--the xB's firm suspension results in quite a stiff ride.

If it were my money, I'd go with the xB. Scion dealers, which have a separate sales staff from their parent Toyota dealers, have a no-hassle policy that's much easier to deal with. The xB is much roomier, is more fun to drive, and can carry more cargo with the seatbacks folded. It also includes ABS, power windows and locks, and a CD player, all of which are options on the base Yaris.

At $14,030, it also costs only a little more than the $13,325 Yaris S--and you'd have to spend an extra $1,050 to get the xB's level of equipment even on the Yaris S, anyway.

Toyota Yaris because Toyota is well known as a maker of quality cars and Scion is basically the new kid on the block with no track record.
