I work with this creature, that could pass for a man or a woman. When she was hired, we made jokes that her name was probably "Chris" or "Pat" or something. Turns out it's freaking name IS PAT!!!! It is pretty heavy set so it could be a dude with man boobs or a big woman with small boobs. The way it dresses is no help whatsoever. What are some questions I could ask someone I barely know (without offending) to find out it's gender?

I had this problem for years, and sometimes on occasion still do. It is EXTREMELY rude to call a human being an "IT". People are people, NOT inanimate objects! And also the person is not a "creature" either. Do you have NO feelings? And if it bothers you so much, why don't you just ASK? I had a lot of people who weren't sure about my gender, and would ask people behind my back. I thought they were cowards and intimidated by me. I had MUCH more respect for the people who came to me and said "I'm sorry, I don't mean to offend you, but how would you like to be addressed? as "he" or "she"?" It's really that easy, and I'm sure the person would respect you more for that than by you calling him or her an "it".

First, break the ice with general questions like, Do you play any sports? Go to the gym often?
Then, get a little more personal and ask are you married? If she says yes, ask when will we get to meet your spouse. If he/she says No to being married, then ask Are you single and what type of people do you actually like to date? Tell her/him your not inquiring for yourself, but you know someone who might be interested? By this time, you should have an answer or a closer look.

I guess could follow him or her to the bathroom and see which one he or she uses. Unless he or she alternates. I wonder if Pat knows that Pat is so ambiguous and enjoys messing with people's heads.

While making conversation with Pat (I assume it is friendly?), bring up marriage and kids. Chances are it'll mention it's wife's/husband's name during conversation, if it's married. Of course, it's spouse's name is probably Chris. Wouldn't that be a b*tch? LOL

Any way you have access to this persons job app to see gender? If not...hmmm......can't think of anything to ask unaffending. Look at hand size, feet size-and adams apple. Do they have a manly voice? Maybe ask what they do for fun or where they hang out?
Tough question!

This would be the time to tell you that the correct pronoun of someone of unspecified/undecided sex is 'he' or 'him', and they are technically a 'man', as they can be used to refer to those of unspecified sex as well as masculine.
Yea, nowadays we tend to use they as a gender neutral pronoun, but the masculine is correct grammatically. Which is why women insisting people say 'firemen and women' are idiots, as firemen can refer to firemen of both sexes.

Hey, this person has to go the washroom during work. Check to see if the person uses the "men" or "women". If you have co-ed washrooms you are out of luck.

1. Mention about the game last night, see if they respond with something that pertains to what happened
2. Mention how you were forced to watch lifetime last night and see what they say.
3. snoop around their desk - see what they have (flowers, spray, etc)
4. make this your best answer

Without asking questions, if you have different bathrooms at work (men/women) just find out which one is used.

Good question.
Ask if Pat is short for his/her real name. Hopefully he/she will either say Patrick or Patricia and not just say "nope, just Pat".
