The passage in Genesis 1:27 — "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female he created them" (before describing a mate being made of Adam's rib and being called Eve in Genesis 2:22) is sometimes believed to be an indication that Adam had a wife before Eve.

Eve was nothing but trouble.

Bettie - I think he's made that pretty obvious on numerous occasions.

Lilith? Who is that?

"(before describing a mate being made of Adam's rib and being called Eve in Genesis 2:22) is sometimes believed to be an indication that Adam had a wife before Eve"

I have never heard this one! And so you named her Lilith?

You should be cautious about trying to "read betwen the words" in the Bible.

And behold, the Lord said unto Adam,
"Why does thou drivest out what I have created? For I crafted her, and she is good."
And Adam cried unto the Lord,
"Father, while her form was excellent, she is a most heinous witch and I desireth a woman who doesn't mind "being the taker", and does not threaten to sever my manhood!"
So sayeth the Lord,
"Also did I create for you Eve, but look how that turned out!"
And Adam wept, for he knew also how foolish he had been.
"But Lord," he said,"did not you create me in your image? How could I turn down a hot naked woman offering me anything? Is that not my kryptonite?"
And the Lord considered this, for he knew that Eve was smoking hot and Adam was a lonely man who had been slapped about by his first wife.
So the Lord sayeth unto Adam,
"Yeah well, that's women, I guess. Just be glad I didn't give you the pregnancy and period stuff. Oh, and next time, try to get them to play nice with each other, for I have bestowed upon you chiseled features, rock hard abs, and wine. If thou cannot get a threesome out of that..."
And Adam rejoiced, little knowing that this would lead to both children and child support for the ex.

Lilith wouldn't bend over for Adam, and in the bible, that's wrong, to stand up to a man if you're female. So Lilith standing up for herself was way worse than Eve eating the apple.

The whole thing is botched, in my opinion.

But Lilith was a troublemaker--she refused to be treated as less than Adam, since they were both made from the same thing--clay.

Because Lilith was too much woman for Adam. She had to go because she didn't fit the profile for the type of woman the patriarchs wanted.

Who's Lilith? You reading between the lines?

The first part is an introduction as to what God did, the latter is the detail of how it was accomplished.

According to Jewish history, Lillith was Adam's first wife, and they got into a fight about (not my fault, didn't make up this story), her being on top during sex. He didn't like it, and she left him. If he hadn't have been such a macho man, they may have made it. Anyway, that's the story. I do think Lillith would have been even worse for poor Adam, apparently, he was pretty gullible.
