I think many of the people who own these dogs are dangerous -- with a strong mix of stupid in there. The dogs are not the issue. The people who are SUPPOSED to be responsible for them are. I would go so far as to say if people followed a few simple rules of thumb with this breed (or any breed), we'd see less in the news about them. Those items are:
* Never leave dogs unattended.
* Socialize EARLY and LONG.
* Have your dog spayed or neutered.
* Monitor dogs at play.
* Never leave food, bones, toys, etc laying around that could trigger a fight.
* Always leash your dog when walking them.
* Think LONG AND HARD about using off lead dog parks.
Course, all these things require a human being to THINK and ACT responsibility. Therein lies the real problem.

Any large breed of dog will be dangerous if not raised correctly. But pits were bred to fight other animals. As a result, they were actually bred to NOT be violent toward people (what good is a dog that will not only fight what you want it to fight, but also attack you at the end?).
Small dogs are much more likely to bite, but they cause less damage and so get less bad press.
A pit can be very loving, loyal, and gentle when raised, socialized, and trained correctly. There is simply no such thing as a "bad breed."
NurseTech23 doesn't know what she's talking about and has obviously never been around pitbulls.

That really depends on how young or old the pit is when you get him/her. If you get the pit right after it is weened from the mother and you treat the dog right and loving then the pit will not be dangerous except to people that try to hurt you or your family. They are very protective of their property and their owners are their property. One of my best dogs was a pitbull! Pits are also one of the few breeds that can taste blood while defending their own and not have to be put down cause they don't just start biting everyone they see afterwards.

NO! I do not believe pit's are dangerous, however, I do believe irresponsible owners are. The people that fight, abuse, neglect, and do everything in their power to make thier pit's aggressive are the real danger. Pit's do have animal aggression but though proper socialization and training that can be controlled in most cases as well. The real danger in pit's is the people that own them. As with any dog that is mistreated or taught to be aggressive. Pit's are an exception though, because they will do anything to please their owners, and therefore can be much more aggressive when they think that is what is wanted from them. Pit's make wonderful family pets, are great with children, and actually scored better in tempermant testing than golden retrievers or labs. Please, if you are curious about Pit's then do some reasearch before you judge.

a pitbull IS dangerous. i live in florida, and the state is starting to ban pitbulls from some cities. because there have been PLENTY of times where they say on the news that a pitbull had to be put to sleep because they injured/killed a kid.

I think all large dogs have the potential to be dangerous if not raised to be good dogs. Pitbulls can be especially dangerous because of their strength. I think it is possible to have a nice pittbull, I have met many.

NurseTech.......I take it you have never owned an American Pit Bull Terrier. They are actually VERY good with children and very loyal animals. They were bred to fight other dogs but bred to be NON-HUMAN aggresive. If I were going to fight my dog (this is only and example) I would give my dog to the other person and I would take their dog, bathe them to make sure they did not have any poison on them and feel every part of their body before the fight. If a dog bit a person they were immediately put down. There for your not correct in saying that they are aggressive dogs. I have a APBT and a 2 year old. I would never leave my child alone with her, but I would not leave my child alone with any other dog either no matter what the breed. APBTs make great family dogs and get a bad name because of ignorant people.

As a breed? No, when raised right they can be used as therapy dogs. They just happen to be built in a way that CAN cause a lot of harm.
Any powerful dog needs someone who knows what they are doing, when trained well they can be the best dogs there are, but is raised badly the damage they cause is worse than a small dog. It's simply a case of scale, small dog=smaller damage if they go bad, Big dog=Big damage. Larger dogs just require good owners, same as small dogs.

I have a 4 year old pitbull and she is just the sweetest in the world. I have a three year old son and she is so gentle with him. She so good I can walk her without a leash. It's because I raised her in a loving enviroment. When I got her at 6 months old she was ROUGH!! This is how dogs enviroment can change everything. :)

The dog is not the problem. Owners mistreating dogs, abusing dogs, training dogs to fight....these are a few of the reasons Pitbulls have a bad reputation.
