13 is the perfect age to start any martial art. leader of iko1 (kyokushin, tkd's often superior rival) started at age 13. he's awesome, look him up in youtube. shokei matsui.

the reason why i believe 13 is a good age, is because that's the age where they start treating you like an adult, and most competent instructors will actually correct many horrible flaws in your movements.

fyi, if you're looking into tkd for sport or "spiritual development," that's fine. don't learn tkd if you're looking to go fighting. and don't lock your knees when you kick, i've had knee problems when i did that.

hope this helps.

Its depends on the maturity of the child in question. We take kids as young as 4 or 5 years old to start. The child will determine if he is ready by how much he is in to it, how fast his skills come along, and whether it is enjoyable to him. A good instructor will discuss this with you if it is a concern of yours. Also a good instructor will have the patience to allow a younger child into his class with the understanding that he won't catch on quite as fast. Generally children between 4-10 years old are really not in to it for the martial arts/self defense aspect but they see it as another sport like little league baseball that they can have fun with their friends while doing it. As a parent, you have to be patient when it comes to your child in Tae Kwon Do. Some kids catch on faster, just like in any thing kids do, so don't be concerned. Hope this helps

With any kind of martial art, the earliest age most schools will take people is around age 5.

Taei Kwon Do is around the same level of impact as karate. That means that for kids they tone things down a bit.

from first grade and up, i know many Tae Kwon Do martial arts dojos that have special kids class (for younger people like 10 and below for example) , adult class (for example 11 and up). but really i started martial arts when i was 4 and did karate, tae kwon do, etc.

It depends on your child's maturity level. They have to be able to have a good attention span and not crumble under the Master's instruction. My son is a bit sensitive, especially when it comes to men, so we didn't enroll him until he was 5. However, our friend's daughter started when she was 4(she is now 6) and she is a red belt already. It teaches respect, self discipline and when they accomplish things, good self esteem.
