You really do not need a very high resolution for machine vision. These cameras are usually pretty close (inches) to the products during inspection and powerful lenses are used so the resolution does not even matter. Example of this would be the cameras made by Cognex, the commonly used are 640X480 and 320X240. There are 1280X960 cams available for the even smaller products (microns and nanos).
