it's got to do with how they smell.. have they eaten or drunk something that's sweet?? that's bound to attrackt wasps... have them only drink water on the beach... save icecream and sweet treats for later... wash their clothes in water only or with a non-scented soap.. don't bring fruits to the beach.. no chewing gum etc.. it's kind of getting back to basics.. but it works.

Well, there should be lots of insect repellent around on the market you haven't tried. Just ask someone at the pharmacy like Boots and ask for advice. However if that doesn't work, just don't pack too much sweet things in your picnic, that attracts wasps. (That includes fizzy drinks, sweets, jam etc.)
The Wasp trap idea is good too, put some jam in an jar without a lid, then move it away from people. Wasps will soon try and eat it but will get stuck and die. (sorry if you don't like killing insects)

Insect repellant doesn't work well on wasps.
Try a Jewish beach.

Well everyone at PETA will not like me for writing this but, if you put Vodka in a spray bottle and squirt the wasps/bees, it will kill them.
(An e-mail circulated a few weeks ago with alternate uses for everyday products. This was on there. I have not actually tried it).

Buy some turkish coffee, put it on a piece of aluminum foil and set it on fire. The smoke will keep wasps away, and it has a nice smell!
