heh heh... you might want to hit your local art supplies store and fork out a couple of dollars for some ready-made.

The ingredients are white lead (highly toxic) or zinc powdered pigment, linseed oil, and powdered gypsum, whiting, or chalk. This mixture takes about 3 weeks to dry, and since it's oil-based, you can't paint acrylics on it. And you'd be crazy to sand the lead mixture (well, it would just make you crazy, then you would die).

If you want a traditional oil-based gesso and don't mind the waiting time, Frederick's makes a good one. It also takes a long time to dry (you can add a siccative - mineral spirits & white lead mixture).

Oh hey - I just yahoo'd up a mixture that uses hide glue instead of linseed oil. http://tallulahs.com/techniques2.html

Myself, I yam lazy... I buy good gesso and seal my boards with Golden GAC 100.

For the love of all things good do not ever use latex or acrylic paint if you are trying to use Renaissance or medieval techniques like egg tempera! Go to http://www.eggtempera.com/ and look for the techniques link. The Cennini link has original renaissance recipes for grounds and gessoes. A good book that I read that is helpful is called "The Art Forger's Handbook." The author was an infamous art forger who was murdered for writing this book!

Also do a search for SCA.org "arts and sciences" links. It is a medieval history organization and many of the people have done research on medieval painting and illumination techniques. I have taken workshops taught by Alessandra Kelley and Randy Asplund, both are really great artists and swell people.

I'm glad that you're interested in learning an ancient technique, panel paintings done in tempera can last thousands of years!

Pasta is nice, because maximum youngsters like it, and also you'll cover quite some vegetables interior the sauce - carrots, zucchini, olives, eco-friendly peppers, onions, mushrooms. now and again you do not even favor to hide them, yet when your daughter is determined no longer to devour vegetables, you could shrink each little thing truly superb, and it is going to melt interior the cooking sauce, till you actually don't be conscious it. some youthful ones who received't generally devour vegetables will also devour them in case you modern them in a thrilling way, like formed like an animal or on a kabob (besides the actuality that i does no longer do the kabob component at 20 months!) Pizza is yet another good component to placed vegetables on, cover with sauce and quite some cheese (good for calcium). good success, only keep attempting, this can be a component that each body youthful ones wade through with choosy eating - I under no circumstances idea my son may ever commence eating vegetables, and now his well-known is Broccoli - you may want to keep proposing the meals, and do not enable it grow to be a skill conflict - also be sure you devour and luxuriate in a tremendous kind of vegetables in the front of your newborn.
