It has nothing to do with the time zones. Its the jet stream. You face tail winds....meaning it pushes the plane faster west to east and you encounter head winds...slows the plane east to west.

Flight time is around 5 hours. in spite of the shown fact that reckoning on the time you're flying, you would be sitting on the floor waiting to take-off or circling interior the air waiting for permission from LAX to assist you to land. you're flying from a hectic airport to a hectic airport so various cases the airline will funds extra time. So the fee ticket could say the flight is 5 hours and 40 seven minutes yet it is using the buffer they throw in to element in an delays. The flight back to NYC could desire to be swifter because you're flying with the wind particularly of against it on your thank you to LAX.

the answer is simple , when a airplane traveling from east to west it's going against the wind ( Vs. tail wind ) there for the plane speed will slow down, and vies versus from west to east with a helping tail wind it will allow the plane to gain more speed therefor it takes less time.

The jet stream, Although I think you have this backwards, as the jet stream travels from west to east, which makes flights from the west to east shorter than flights from the east to the west.

The Jet stream. It can run over 100mph west to east, giving the airplane more groundspeed.

Its because of the change in time zones. It actually takes the same time to fly....but appears different because NYC and LAX are in different time zones.

Maybe the route they take is different. Or maybe the airplane has to circle and get in line to land at LAX
