There's only one right way to do it, and any number of wrong ways.
Yes, if you didn't know what you were doing, you could do some permanent damage.

Insertion of a catheter in a male is harder than in a female because of the prostate gland, particularly if it is enlarged. I doubt any permanent damage would be done, if it is inserted gently, and it only can go one way.

Very difficult to insert when the patient has an enlarged prostate. Go slowly with alot of Surgilube.
