My husband and I were traveling in the southwest,we stopped at a rest stop,to let our dog do her bathroom thing ..My husband saw a car with a flat tire and asked did they need help to change it,the guy said he didn't have a jack,my husband let him use ours and stood and talked with the man as the guy changed his tire . The man told my husband that he and his family were trying to get to California to his moms ,she had offered them a home after he lost his job in Phoenix. They had been living in that car eating canned beans for 3 days because they ran out of money and had no way of fixing the flat.and out of gas well my husband got on his cell called the next little city and we waited for AAA to bring some gas for the car ,then my husband gave them all the cash we had which was $ 200,00. They were very grateful ,they ask for an address so he could return the money when he got a job in Calif. and lo and behold 4 months later a money order for $200. came in the mail . great feeling

For about a year, there was a homeless gentleman (Robert) nearby my work place. Every day I saw him (usually about 3 or 4 days a week), I'd give him 2 or 3 dollars. He was the most polite, gentle person I'd ever met. He has a mental illness that prevents him from holding down a job. A sad but not uncommon story.
I figure that over the course of the year I gave him between $280 and $320 ... not a lot but he made it seem like a real blessing each time I handed him a little cash.
I changed jobs after a year and never see Robert any longer. I hope someone else has taken my place ...

The most cash.. just $20. But I have taken one out to eat at Mc Donalds (I know fancy right) and to the grocery store to get some food. He was such a sweet man. Poor guy lost his job so he paid his electricity and water just to keep his house running and let his insurance lap then his house burned down in an electrical fire. Go figure! He worked part time at a second hand furniture store but the money he got from the place went to his kids who were living with their mom (he was divorced) Poor guy.

i've only given a few dollars, but i'm never where they are. i have given a sandwhich tho. but i asked if he wanted it first. my mom works in dc so she's always around. one time this guy yelled "oh miss" and my mom turned around and he asked if she could spare some money and she had a five on her so she gave it to him. then she started walking away and he yelled "oh miss" again and she thought he was trying to get money from someone else but she turned around and he was staring at her and just mouthed "thank you". she was touched. we actually "adopt" homeless children for christmas every year and buy them clothes and shoes and winter coats and a toy. my mom figures, its just her and myself, and i dont ever ask for much for xmas anymore, so she might as well make some's xmas good.

Several years ago, my family was visiting San Francisco. My son had just mastered reading and noticed a bum with a sign that read, "I'm not going to lie to you. I want money to buy beer." We gave him $20 and a six pack of fancy beer we had just bought...just for being honest.

I don't agree with giving them money, that's just anencouragement to keep being homless. I give money to people who are picking up bottles and cans because they are at least trying and they are working. Oh, and they are recycling
