I mean, maybe I have the wrong attitude, but I WAS homeless for 3 months, and I had enough intelligence to seek resources and stay in shelters, get a job, and work my way out of the situation. So now, when I see homeless people, I'm compassionate, obviously, but I give them phone numbers to resources, or food, but never money, becasue if I could do it, and NEVER asked for a dime, I know it's possible.

I'm just wondering why some of you guys are thinking I AM still homeless? I am not. I actually have a full time and I'm in college, and I have my own apartment now. Also, why did this one answerer call me Riley? Please don't use my personal name on these sites. Thanks.

Amen, but a lot of the times people get discriminated on. And a lot of these resource centers are not so compassionate. The people working there act is if they are immortal and 200 times better than you. They act like they don't want to help you and they try to belittle you. I was homeless and lived out my car for 3 months with my 1 1/2 old son, the lady at the Welfare place to make a long story short and a short story shorter she treated me DIRT because I needed help. I gave up on the welfare system. Two days later this lady gave me a job and a place to stay until I was able to make ends meet. I have worked my a** off for the last 2 years and now I own my own home!!!!!!!!

Everybody has different views on these kind of things and the answer I seem to get most of the time is that most homeless people have some sort of mental illness and arent mentally stable and have problems with drugs and alcohol. A lot of them probably just gave up on life and think its easier to just pan handle and hope to make a little money. The route you took is much better and should give some homeless people a little hope that if they work hard they can turn it around.

There are other options, Riley.
Perhaps a bit more difficult in your area, but here in
Souther Cali. There are tons of options.
We have food banks, where you wouldn't have to beg for food.
And there's places that offer free hotel vouchers for homeless, mind you it's on skid row and it's not the Ritz, but you would have your own little room up to 3 months. that and the food bank will suffice a newly homeless person. Also during this time it gives you a time to adapt and adjust. Find a job, find friends that will help, and counsel you on the grief of being homeless. And after the 3 months is up and you still need time you can be extended for another 3 months. Six months of hotl stay should get you right back on your feet. And to seriously answer your question..
God will send you help, we are not in this world alone, remember that. During this time of homelessness people will see that it's sincere and they will help. Life is hard, but we can get through it, only with a little help from our friends, so yes, I will ask and beg for help to save me a terrible, miserable existance.

Many homeless people live for the moment. They do not have the mental capacity to seek a long term solution for their dilemma. Their unsocial behavior of often out of their control.
In some cases, a modestly priced medication can 'cure them', but there is no state that funds this sort of program. These people go untreated, and instead, go on at a much higher cost to all of us.
In other cases, it is a matter of substance abuse. Their addiction places them far from the scope of control. They face the worst sort of hopelessness, as they resort to crime when they hit the bottom.
It is great to hear that your situation improved itself through your own hard work and diligence.
This is a situation that appears on the agenda of all levels of government. In 2000, the United Nations added Hunger and Poverty to it's list of Millennium Development Goals as ITEM Number one. All of member nations approved of these goals.

Who are you to judge anyone? Good for you that you made it out and never had the need to "ask" anybody for anything, but to "down" others because they haven't or couldn't for whatever reasons do what you managed to do......that's pretty arrogant. Just because for a short period of time you shared homelessness with these people you didn't start this journey with them and have no idea how they got to this homeless place ....each and every one of us has a different road to travel in this experience we call life.

It's a shame more homeless people don't think like that!
I would probably do exactly what you did. However, I think a good number of homeless people don't because they're alcoholics or drug addicts, and they really don't care...all they want is money so they can get their next "fix". And honestly...if the stereotypical homeless person went to look for a job, who would hire them?

Perhaps you have mental resources that the other homeless don't posses. I find a lot of the homeless are suffering in the mental capacity. You perhaps a little more on the ball and was very lucky.

Not everybody is resourceful as you! Hence they are homeless...
If you want to give money,..it doesn't do any harm..
But I agree food and advice are much better, but please do not look down on those who are not as able to cope as you.
Most homeless have mental health problems and can not cope with life. That is why they are there. They need professional help...

I would ask people for jobs, and use the money i make to buy food for myself. I would also look for housing that is based on your monthly income. If need be, I would take on 2 full time jobs just to pay the necessary bills, rent, utilities, etc.

The majority of homeless who remain that way for any length of time are emotionally disabled, suffering from paranoia, schizophrenia and other disorders. I commend you for getting out of your unfortunate predicament, but some others don't have the mental capacity.
