So I've never been good at keeping up with current events, but lately i've been trying to stay informed. I read something on a website today about the U.S. evacuating U.S. citizens from Beirut because of the fighting going on with Israel. Now what I want to know is how this all got started..why is lebanon fighting with israel? I have no clue when this started or why. Can someone please give me the background info that i need to understand all this?

ok, well Lebanon is not fighting Israel. Its the terrorist group Hezbollah and Hamas are the trouble makers. They kidnapped an Israeli solider about three weeks ago and refused to return him unless Israel released hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. This is not a outstanding request since Israel has released prisoners in the past. For some time now Israel has removed its occupation from the "Gaza Strip" which it has controlled since the 6 Day War. This "strip" of land was used more or less as a buffer zone so that rockets and mortar rounds could not reach Israel. This is where the fighting is going on now.
After Israel asked for the safe return of its solider and was not given into, and after many warnings, Israel began bombarding the "Gaza Strip" that is now occupied by Hezbollah and Hamas among other small militant groups. In retaliation Hezbollah and Hamas began to fire new rockets into Israel that can reach areas that were believed by the Israelis to be out of range. On top of that they captured 2 more solders from the Israeli army.
The new issue is that Iran is believed to be the one supplying the terrorist groups, along with Syria. Nether one of theses country's like the U.S. or Israel and hate us with a passion. This is not the first time stupid things like this have cause problems and it will not be the last.

Personally I think they fight so much cause its always hot as hell over there. They are just pissed off in the heat all the time!

Hezbollah - which is a terrorist group that has taken over the southern part of Lebanon - crossed over the Israeli border and kidnapped two soldiers.

They then started firing missiles into Israel. In response, Israel attacked them back.

Israel is not attacking Lebanese targets per se, except where there are known Hezbollah bases, or where they think Hezbollah will bring in new weapons from Syria (i.e. Israel bombed the airport in Beirut, as well as roads). There have unfortunately also been some accidental civilian casualties.

This is an act from Iran to try and start a war with America because they know that we are politically unable to attack and the UN will not react because they are about as worthless now as the League of nations before WW II. Iran is using the attacks to detract attention from its missile progam and to instigate an all out war. What they did not relize is that this has thrown them into the forefront because they are suspected of helping Hesbollah with missile shipments and other things. Syria is next on the list in my opinion and after that America and her allies will not stand by to watch Iran, the controller of Hesballah and Hamas, gain nuclear capabilities. We will wipe them off the map and reorganize the whole area if neccessary. It has been years since America has had to defend itself on a major scale but the time draws nearer to when we will have to eventually either give up or fight. The general public does not understand this yet but they will once another 9/11 happens here on our turf. This is a world wide conflict and is not going to just go away. Those who would sacrifice freedom for peace, deserve neither. Its time to fight back.

Fighting a terrorist, which is not the case, doesn't mean destroying the whole country.
If Israel is fighting for peace then, I guess, the lesson isn't learnt. Palestinians will never stop fighting for their countries, so is Iraq by the way.
Fighting for peace doesn't mean killing innocent people, doesn't mean killing children, doesn't mean depriving the Lebanese from medicine and food, to the extent that assistances provided by other countries were bombed.

What is happening now is not a revenge from israel, it is a beginning of destruction in the whole area. Syria would follow Lebanon i guess, and it will not be the end.

Lebanon is not fighting with Israel. Hezbollah, the terrorist arm of Iran and Syria, is fighting with Israel, from within Lebanon.

After Syria "left" Lebanon, Hezbollah moved in and built a large paramilitary force. Iran has armed these thugs with medium range rockets, which they are firing at Israel.

Hezbollah and Hamas (another terror group) have grabbed some Israeli soldiers and are holding them, ostensibly to obtain some concessions from the Israelis. Israel has responded with attacks on known Hezbollah locations, which, unfortunately, have been specifically placed in civillian locations. Prior to the air and missile strikes, the Israelis did drop leaflets announcing their intent, suggesting that the populace evacuate. This is unlike Hezbollah, which is only targetting civillian locations (eg. cities, farms).

It's similar to the war in the Balkans. This animosity goes back centuries if not millenia, based on religious and cultural differences. Same thing with the ancient and bitter rivalry between cats and dogs. Always there, but pointless.

This fight started long time ago, even during the biblical times. It is just a continuation of the on-going conflict between Muslims and the Jews.
