i had one last night and of course i vomited . I have had 6 in my whole life and they started 7 years ago. I get one huge one every year.They last for up two 12 hours from begining to end. I feel like it's certain smells that cause mine , but Im not sure . I do know that smells are what im most sensitive to during a migraine. When I get a migraine the pain is as much as hard labor when giving birth ( i have had 4 kids ) . Is that normal to be in that much pain during a migraine ?

My wife suffers migraines (we've struggled with this issue for nearly 22 years). Sadly, there is no specific cause. My advise to you is to avoid getting caught up in the theory that there is ONE THING that causes migraines. It is usually a combination. They say 27 meteorological events must be in perfect alignment to cause a tornado. Migraines are a lot like that.

Common causes to migraines:
* Menstral cycle
* Sulfer foods (chocolate is the worst! - bummer)
* perfume or strong smells
* changes in weather
* florecent lighting
* muscle tension

The last one is a very interesting one to us specifically right now. We are going to a new physical therapist who has been using a "muscle pressing" technique (not message). It is a long process but it seems to be helping. Best yet, it doesn't involve medications!

If you only get migraines once a year, I suggest you talk to your doctor about Imitrex. It is a wonderful fast acting medication that might be a God send for you (it is for my mother).

Good luck. I know how unbelievably painful migraines are. We will say a prayer for you tonight!

Yes! I have had migraines for years and years. Finally I went to the neurologist and I started taking Topomax, it is a migraine prevention medication that you take daily. I have to tell you, it works great! I have not had a migraine in months! I used to have them at least once a week or more, and now I just get small headaches if that. Go talk with your doctor, this stuff is great. They say to stay away from peanut butter, coffee, and tobacco among other things. But like I mentioned above, go see your doc, he/she will let you know if Topomax will work for you. I am so happy with it, I don't know what I ever did without it! Good luck!

No one really knows. Hormones play a role, because women have more migraines once they begin to have their mense, and again during menopause.
Some triggers that are well documented are chocolate, caffeine, tobacco, soft cheeses, red wine, red vinegar, balsamic vinegar, and fermented foods. Bright lights, especially the sun, can trigger a migraine. Wear sun glasses and or a baseball hat.

I don't know for sure but I have two kids who get them. I read that magnesium is very good for that and if taken daily will keep away migrains. My daughter takes them when she gets migrains and it does subside a lot. My son doesn't try anything at all so he still has them.

Contraction of blood vessels near the temple area, that is mediated by nervous system messages. So migraines are a brain related malady, where neural messages trigger this pain. Since it is related to Nervous System, that's why persons affected can't stand light, noise or stimuli of other kinds, because they affect brain and it sends more orders that produce this horrible pain.
Normal painkillers don't cure it, since they are related to membranous messages, not brain ones.
Central Analgesics are prescripted for this one, but they cause habit and are expensive. Therapy and hypnosis are known helpers as therapy.

MSG used in Asian cooking causes my niece to get migraines.Make a list of all the foods you eat,then you can somewhat tell what is triggering the headaches.
Sometimes your monthy cycle can cause them too.
