Help! We have a 1 yr old Border Collie, when she was young she began to growl and bite at the Vacuum cleaner, then this summer she started doing the same to the Lawn mower! Yesterday, she chewed up the hoses to the pool pump! We have always corrected her when she did something like this, but she continues to attack machinery. I began putting her in her crate to keep her away while I vacuumed or we ran the mower. She sit's and there and barks her fool head off! As for the pool hoses she ruined them and we had to buy new. Hubby was none to pleased! Pump could have burned up! I can't keep her locked up all the time while the pool is running! She is a Border Collie after all and needs to run and play! Anyone know how to stop this kind of behavior?

border collies are HERDERS, and energetic to boot, as your well aware of. she is BORED out of her MIND!!
she needs exercise. this is not a breed that will be okay with a walk around the block. she needs VIGOROUS play to work off that pumped up energy.

take her to obedience classes for starters. border collies (in my opinion) are one of the smartest dogs on the planet! they pick up training very quickly and LOVE IT. its like a drug to them....esp. the agility training, or Frisbee catching. as soon as she gets enough exercise and PLAY PLAY PLAY she will settle down.
take her to a park...throw a Frisbee around, take her to obedience classes, take her to agility training....even a herding class! let her do the job she was bred for! there are herding clubs you could get her involved in.
YOU have to make sure she gets enough play, exercise or you will NEVER get her behavior under control.

Try to get her involved in an obedience class of some sort for starters. Once you can get her to obey you, you'll all be a lot happier. After that, I'd try to get her involved in something like flyball or a herding class, something that will let her stimulate her mind and at the same time burn off energy.

ABored Border Collie is a Bad Border Collie...This is a Dog Bred to work....When they dont get enough physical and mental stimulation they become neurotic. You need to take time..Alot of it and spend with your dog, Training her things(She will enjoy it)Throwing her a ball to chase... and going on from there...Shecan do a complete turn around but if you dont have much time shes just not your breed...These dogs need work,Play and time spent with them..They are probably the smartest of all dog breeds

You need to entertain her mind. She is bored and is taking it out on things that appear interesting to her. I grew up with Border Collies and Lassie Collies. Get a small back pack or working dog vest and put a couple of 20 oz bottles filled with water in them and take her for a long walk. Try to walk her on a daily basis. Try taking her to a doggie park. If you tire out her mind she may calm down. Also you could try taking her to a tennis court that is closed in and throw tennis balls for an hour or so..She needs a change of pace and quickly.

sounds like your dog doesn't have enough to occupy her mind. She's bored and has found a fun game to play. You need to give her more excercise, also, look into getting her into agility classes or flyball, or herding trials...this will allow her an outlet for the energy and something to focus her mind on.

well for the pool pump put a fence or thing around the pump, as for the vacuum and lawnmower, have you ever tried running her down with it to try and scare her, then she might be afraid of it and wouldn't bite it up.

good luck

I have been reading "Cesar's way" by Cesar Milan. It is a good book to help with dog behavior. I know you have a high energy breed who needs about an hour of hard exercise a day. good luck

Well, my neighbors foster abused animals, and they send the dogs to school. They don't stay there like camp, it's just for a couple hours.

Um, is the noise scaring her or something? Can you build a fence around the pool or something to keep her out? Like a cage around the pump? That is all that I can say. Sorry
