Supposedly, we have giardia at our house. We have lived there 8 months and had 2 puupies get sick in Feb. and one died. Then we had 2 more puppies become sick in June and one of them died. They all showed signs of diarehha but would eat and drink and then vomit. The first puppy that survived I took all food and water away for about 4 or 5 days and then he begin to show improvement. The puppy that died in Feb. was sick 2 days and died. The puppies that became sick in June were never taken off food or water but the puppy that died had also chewed and swallowed an electric cord before he got sick. The puppy that survived was put on fluids and kept confined to a crate. I need to know if either of these could have been giardia.

It does sound like either giardia or cocci.. there is an inexpensive medicine for them, (Albon) that would treat either problem... vets will tell you that cocci is not transmitted from other species of animals, but I know that when we bought baby Ostriches with cocci, it spread to my puppies... I had to treat several litters before it was finally controlled...
Don't withold water, but you can use bottled water if that is the cause...Treat the first time that they refuse a meal, don't wait for further symptoms... Treat ALL pups, as soon as you treat the first affected one.

giardia is actually a very common protozoal infection that occurs in dogs of all ages, the reason it's thought not to be so common is because most dogs that have this are asymptomatic, meaning that the dogs do not show any symptoms or any problems. the dogs that usually show the symptoms are the younger puppies and it's normally diarehha that is the main symptom. i've personally haven't seen dogs vomiting from the infection, however since it attacks the dogs intestinal lining, i suppose it is possible in some cases. as for the puppy that died in Feb, i don't think giardia would have killed a pup in two days. it sounds more like parvovirus with the vomiting and how quick it was in killing the pup(altho a lot of ppl now a days assume everything is parvo..oy...lol). the only way to know this, would have been to take a stool sample to the vet's office and have tests run. as for the dog that ate the electrical wiring, it most likely was that which caused the pup to die. it most likely got stuck in his intestines or stomachs and could not pass it, which can also cause diarehha. and for the pup that you say has giardia, is it being treated at a vet office or are you doing the treating? this is a very treatable infection but he definately needs to be treated with antibiotics to kill the parasites. also, bleach everything the pup and the feces have come in contact with. use a 1:30 bleach to water solution as giardia is very contagious and may be spread to humans(although this isn't proven, just a theory). hope it all works out and don't forget to puppy proof your house, and if you can't watch your puppy it's good to invest in a crate for when you can't keep your eye on him. goodluck and i hope this helped!!

Giardia is not fatal. It is actually found in most water especially stagnant water. It can be treated with antibiotics. Now, parvo is a disease that can be fatal in puppies. If it is not treated and even sometimes if it is treated it is fatal. It starts off with bloody diarrhea and vomiting. They usually develop a high temperature and stop eating and drinking. They have to be put on IV fluids and meds immediately if they are going to have any chance of survival. Parvo is very contagious. That is why it is recommended that puppies get vaccinated for parvo at 6, 9, 12, and 16 weeks of age. Once parvo get in an area it is hard to get rid of. It can stay in the ground or on clothes fro a very long time. I would not recommend having any puppies in the area for at least 6 months.

I don't know if it is fatal in dogs at all. It is harmless to humans. Supposedly you can only get it if you are drinking and or eating bad food or water. Are you feeding this to your puppies? I don't think so. You may want to reassess the symptoms and get a new vet or stop taking your friends advice. The infection can also sound like Corona Virus. Look up the symptoms yourself or see a vet, its the only way to be sure. You are losing a lot of money breeding your pits. You should do a little more research and do a cleanup on the yard. 10% bleach and water will kill almost everything that may affect your puppies, also works on Parvo. Good luck

Giardia is fatal at all ages if left untreated. I can't understand how your puppy dies from eating an electrical cord... puppy proof your house!!!

It was probably passed to both puppies by not cleaning up infected poop in the yard or having stagnant water around. Shame on you!

Take you pups to the vet!

It replace into unlawful for the breeder to sell you a 6 wk previous domestic dog. you genuinely could desire to document a police checklist and phone Animal administration. i'm so sorry your domestic dog is ill, however the breeder needless to say did no longer guard the canines if she offered them (illegally) at this style of youthful age. you may desire to additionally document a small claims case (sue her) for the vet expenses which you have incurred because of the domestic dog's ailment. The courtroom can order her to pay all the scientific charges in case you deliver the documentation out of your vet to instruct that the domestic dog replace into ill once you got her. Your calls to the police and AC (plus a lawsuit) will optimistically avert different doggies form suffering the comparable element as your domestic dog is now. as a techniques because of the fact the giardia.....i think of that if the vet concept it replace into deadly, the vet could've advised you. in spite of the shown fact that, evidently like a foul case, and there is often the prospect that your domestic dog won't make it, yet because you got her to the vet so promptly, i think of she has a sturdy possibility of surviving. i'm hoping she gets extra desirable quickly.
