WHat kind of puppy do you have? I had the same problem with a foster dog, a little pomeranian who thought cat poo was caviar. He was small enough that I bought a huge rubbermaid tote from Wal-Mart, one with really high sides. My cat could jump in, but little Fritzie was shut out. Also, they sell litter boxes with top-entry covers. They look like normal hooded litterboxes but the entrance is a hole in the top rather than in the side. That might work for you too. If you own your home, you might consider putting the litterbox in a closet that stays shut and installing a small cat door, one that your cat can get through but not the dog. Good luck!!

Dogs tend to eat animal waste for one of two reasons. The first is that the dog is not getting enough protein, and the second is just general housekeeping. I'm assuming that your dog is just eating it to clean up, as many dogs will do (mine included!). I suggest putting the litter box somewhere where the dog cannot reach it, or find a litter box cover with an opening big enough for your cat, but too small for the dog to get access.

I think its difficult to do other than making it harder for the dog to get access to the cat's box (like with a lid as someone suggested). Our dog at one point was dining on her own in the back yard. A vet suggested that we sprinkle hot sauce and pepper flakes on it to me it less appealing to the dog. If you think about that for a minute it sounds so crazy: lets take what has to be one of the worst tasting things in the world (based on the smell anyway) and do something to make it taste worse?

Cat poop is like Almond Roca for dogs!
My friend's have this problem so they bought a top entry litterbox. The cats adapted quickly and the dogs can't get to the stuff. Check out the link below.

There is a supplement that you can buy and feed to your cat to make their poop taste less apealing to dogs. For-Bid is one brand that comes to mind. Google it.
This also works for dogs who eat their own poop or other dog's poop.
It seems to me that easiest thing would be to buy a cover for your litter box and place it in such a way that the dog can't get to it.

No - a lot of dogs do this. Just try to keep the puppy away from it! He's young, so he may grow out of the habit, too.
