Most arrests rely on tips and police informants. It is not all CSI like on TV. If there are no willing or existing witnesses, then police have little to work with.

Plus you live in a very free society. The down side is that it is very free for criminals as well as decent citizens.

The murder solving rate in most jurisdictions is something like 60%+

Time is always on society's side, I doubt there are any significant criminals that get away with everything forever. Eventually they are caught for something.

heck, they got Capone for cheating on his taxes!

What is truely amazing is that they solve ANY cold cases at all!

Their is just to many murders that happen here. Even back in the old days their was thousands of murders that couldn't be solved because the lack of technology. Today those murders are being looked at in the cold case files with the new technology. If you notice the shows some are very old. The murders that are hard to solve also have to do with the identity of the person dead. These people were either home less or didn't have a close relationship with their families and that makes it hard for the detectives to understand the victim.

the reason for unsolved cases is because a investagator can only work on a case for so many weeks or month, solved or unsolved they are forced to work on another. Then maybe months or even years another investagator comes along and have to investagate that particular case for a certain amount of time.Usually taking one case maybe 10 or more years to solve. But murder cases same percedure, but i don't know if there is a limited time to investagate those problems. Besides crime is high and it goes on everyday so it may not ever get solved.

How about lack of involvement and caring on the citizen's part, folks?! I work in Family Court and I HATE what I see. The juveniles, whose parents have already taught their 8, 9 & 10 year old kids to totally disrespect the law and do whatever they want because it just DOESN'T MATTER to them. The witnesses who get hurt, beaten or whatever -- but refuse to testify -- or even go right back to living with the person they just got beaten by. You say lack of evidence. So many cases get thrown out due to lack of witnesses showing up you wouldn't believe it.

How about overwhelming numbers of cases? Ask your Attorney General how many cases come up for prosecution -- or your police department how many cases of crime happen in your town. How many police do you actually have to handle them?

Do you, yourself, respect the law? Would you testify in a case and give evidence if you had to? Or would you let a case go cold? Do you care enough to help? Hmm -- maybe I've got some posting to do myself . . .

Lack of evidence and a lack of time on the part of police and courts. In this system, you must have evidence BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT to convict someone. Without that evidence, there is no use bringing a case that will just end up costing you and I more money.

Because people who might suspect someone they know, or might have seen or heard something suspicious don't come forward to the police, or when they do, they are discounted up front and the police don't follow up on it. The police usually have a few set-in-stone rules about who to start suspecting first, and it is very, very hard to get them to consider anyone else unless THEY discover a clue or clues to that effect.

Because your country is soooooo big and the police just don't have the evidence. It could also be that they don't have the time to finish one case before the next one is on their doorstep

That is SUCH A GOOD QUESTION! My cousin was held while a pitt-bull attacked him, tortured and then shot 8 times in the abdomen and once in the head, execution style, Oh yeah, and he was African American. Do you think his murder was investigated, NO! and Do you think that justice was served, NO! He was only 26years old! That hurted me to my heart! But I have notice that when it comes to Black on Black crime, it's almost as if their saying, "One less N_ _ _ _ r we have to worry about!"

Because our justice system is soooooo slow. Wouldn't have near as much crime if they'd go back to hangin' murder's in the town square.
