The one that I am thinking about has a speed limiter, that I can adjust down to really slow, a kill switch that'll stop it if he falls off, and also has a remote control kill switch that I can use to stop it if he gets out of control.

With those cheap plastic battery powered ones being so expensive, I would really like to get him something that he can grow into, and this is about the same price. I plan on supervising him closely while he is learning/practicing, on our grass as we have a large yard for him to learn in where he couldn't really get hurt. Wife thinks he's too young, and maybe he is, but this would really be something that he can grow into.

There are actually laws that require a child to be 12, 14 even 16. You need to check your local laws. But 3, no matter where you live, is too young.

By Indiana law, a person must be at least 14 to ride an ATV unsupervised.

Children who are at least age 12 and who are born on or after January 1, 1988 may operate an ATV if they hold a valid Wisconsin ATV safety certificate.

New York: State law allows children as young as 10 to operate an ATV without parental supervision

Check the laws for your state. And I have heard that ATV dealerships wont even sell one to you if they know it is intended for an underaged child....

buy him a power wheels or a bike if you really want him to get around. i know power wheels can support at least up to an 8 year old maybe even 10. some of the power wheels are really cool. like the hummers and the corvette. i wanted to get my son the corvette, but we are in military housing and don't have the space. plus, when he's done with it you can put it away for your other kds, if you have anymore, or grandkids. the link below is actually to the safety 1st brand corvette. it even has a car radio(batterie powered).
check it out. i wish there were toys like this when i was a kid.
hope i helped.

even though it seems more practical to get something that he could use for many years, i would still consider the hot wheels or whatever they are called, instead. they are safer for a small child--but still require close supervision!
i would wait until he is 6-10, depending on his size and ability to understand things(i have a 7 year old cousin that is the size of a normal 10 year old, and acts like one--i would think he could operate an ATV fine with supervision).
sorry, but i will have to side with your wife. 3 is just a wee bit pushing it. ;-)

p.s. always remember to buy a helmet for whichever you choose! :-)

I have to say that some 3 year olds can handle a lot more than people give them credit for. I have a 3 year old son, and he rides his bike like evil Knievel! anyways get him on it for a little test ride and you'll have your answer. otherwise you could always go on one with him riding in front of you. The fact that you are asking if its a good idea, does not mean you should have child services called on you....that was a pretty stupid thing to say. There are way WORST things than trying to give your child some FUN!!

OH AND I HAVE A BIG WHEELS FOR MY SON, AND IT SUCKS, CAN BARLEY GO OVER THE GRASS!

I would wait until he's older. ATV's can kill little kids if they're not supervised. Saw a show about them on 60 Minutes and unless you're planning to ride with him do not get it! He's too little right now and they are dangerous.

Did you suffer a head injury somewhere along the line? A 3-year old does not have the motor skills, instinct or practical knowledge to operate an ATV. Have you talked to the child's pediatrician? You'll be lucky if he/she doesn't report you to Child Services

Absolutely do not buy your 3 year old an ATV!!! They are one of the leading causes of childhood serious injuries and deaths. ATV's are not safe for any children who are not carefully taught about how to safely operate them, and even then they are still dangerous. It is impossible to teach a 3 year old how to be safe on an ATV. Please wait until he is older and can understand all of the dangers associated with irresponsible ATV operation!

the point shouldn't be whether or not he can drive one because he probably can. the point you should think about is if at any speed, whether 2 mph or 10mph, if the four wheeler rolls on him, chances are that at some point it will, it will definetly outweigh him enough to hurt him. you should find something that will fit him bettter, and not have to wait for him to grow into. you'll just get him hurt, think about what is more important here. just remember, if you don't tell them what they're missing how will they know?
