I would like to buy a digital camera... however, I have no idea what would be a decent camera for a good price. I'm interested in the "technical stuff" -- numbers and the such. I'd like to use this camera to dabble into a bit of "serious" photography; not stuff like taking pictures of friends and on trips.

Here are two websites that will help you choose a camera.

http://www.dcresource.com/buyersguide/
Also has professional reviews on many other cameras

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp
Also has a hell of alot more info than just the buying guide. Tends to overload you with info though.

Professional Photographers use Canon. Of course, these are digital SLR type cameras and they are expensive.

In spite of this, I recently bought the Nikon Coolpix L1 from the local Costco store for about $210.

My previous digital camera was an Olympus. While I loved the color that it produced, here were the problems. CCD array started to retain it's charge, so everything started to get washed out. I learned about a discharge procedure, but it did not last too long. Eventually, the flash card socket failed, and the camera went dead.

I have seen photos from other cameras, and did not like what I saw.

By the way, the Kodak "print your own" stations at stores like CVS, WalGreens and other stores makes terrific prints, faster and cheaper than what you can do on your computer. But if you do your own, consider the Canon printer. I believe that thier color is the best.

I would recommend the Nikon D50. A friend of mine has one and I've seen the pictures it takes. It's quite an impressive camera. It would be a great choice to start "dabbling in serious photography." It has plenty of features, but not so many that your head will hurt while learning it.

Stay away from the Kodak line. Although kodak is the premier company in camera, thier batties in the Kodak Digitals suck big time. I swear the batteries in my kodak don't last 20 minutes if I use it for indoor and evening photography.

Cannon's are excellant. I however bough a preofessional grade Panasonic. They are terrific. Multiple lenses give you the ability for close up and wide angle shots.
