I really don't suggest babelfish if you don't have the basics, because your translations come out all scrambled. About.com has a good japanese section, and you can sign up for daily lessons. You could also try getting a penpal. There are many good grammar books, and audio/book kits. Reading manga helps some, once you've learned kana, because the pictures help you get the idea, and also because so many stories will use all different formal/informal speech. And movies and music--they help you to get better at picking out the words. Go to Barnes and Noble. Their language section should have some good stuff. Also, the library. To learn kana, just type stuff like "japanese script" or "learn kana", "hiragana", "katakana", etc. That should be real easy to find.

Translation sites don't really work well, as they usually just translate the words and the most common grammatical features. Whatever you translate would sound silly. If you're looking for words and phrases, try

www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html

There are numerous dictionaries here, some of which will be useless to you, others of which will take some getting used to. Still, they are the best ones I've found on the web.

You might also try the language learning resources featured at about.com. Some are better than others, but you should be able to find something to meet your needs.

You might also see if your local library has any language learning materials to borrow.

Gambatte! (Good luck!)

Japanese translations are hard to do with a program because it comes out so messily. However, there are some nice people on the Internet willing to help translate and I would suggest either http://www.thejapanesepage.com or http://www.jref.com 's forums.
