I swim everyday and its taking a heavy toll on my hair. Is there something I can put on it before I swim to protect it?

Soak it with water then cover it in tons of conditioner and leave it in. Then get in and swim. Hair is porous and if is is dry and thirsty a lot more chlorine will get in. Cover it in water and conditioner and it won't absorb the chlorine.

I put conditioner on my hair before going swimming and let the sun work on it at least 15 minutes before going in the pool. It seems to provide a barrier to the drying chlorine. Then I wash and condition it afterwords.

You have to wash your hair after you swim, every time. This is ok if you use gentle, sulfate free shampoos that don't dry out your hair. Also, use an oil to seal moisture and keep your hair healthy. I used to be in the swim team at my school and I used a brand called Pro Natural’s argan oil shampoo/conditioner and after I used their argan oil because you use it after a shower and leave it in. It's not greasy or anything so I loved it and it kept my hair soft and healthy. You have to get them online though, look them up and see if you like them.

Swim caps work, but if that is not what you want, then I would suggest using a really good deep conditioner on a daily basis. You also need to find a shampoo that is designed specifically for swimmers, they make them, and it will help keep your hair healthy also.
