I was informed by a worker at a ford company that the Ford Contours are basically a disposable car. After so many months the car will start to have problems and then when fixed something esle will go wrong. I got rid of mine and got a F-150 I like it alot better and it has not given me any problems. I have put over 10,000 miles on it in under three months. It still runs like new.

The motors and transmissions if maintained are pretty reliable with the 2.5v-6 having issues with water pumps (the water pump is in the back of the motor and has it's own belt)
The cars were designed in Germany as the Mondeo, the main problem is European electrics suck and it does on this car.. Multiple recalls including 1 for the headlight switch, multiple for the a/c fan resistor/blower switch melting due to too small of a wire, and one main one for the insulation breaking off the wiring and shorting out in high heat high humidity areas like the south.
Most of the problems were fixed by 2000, with the 2000 models basically being the most trouble free out of the series.. However Ford discontinued the car due to lack of sales...

I have a 99 contour now and have only had one factory problem (there are problems that just come along with age that are to be expected you know). The only factory problem that has come about is the dash (where the vent is) has popped up. Come to find out this was recalled to be fixed but because it wasnt a safety problem, not everyone got the recall. To be fixed now, it is expensive. It is just not aesthetically pleasing, though. Otherwise, it gets pretty good gas mileage and like I said, I have never had any othe problems besides those that naturally develop with age in any car.

I own a 1995 Ford Contour GL (4-cylinder), and aside from blowing main gasket on engine a few years ago, been a reliable car. Only hang up I have, in extremely cold weather I have to let it warm up 10-15 minutes before I can get it out of Park.

Actually the Contour and its Mercury counterpart, the Mystique were pretty reliable cars with far fewer problems than the somewhat more expensive Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable.

all cars are built with factort problems thats why there are mechanics around but some cars have more problems than others and contours are slightly above the average

My neighbors got one with over 200k. She's a single mom and has just had routine maintanance done on it. She just bought a new car but is keeping the old Contour around just to drive her dog around in!

I have one for almost two years now, so far Ive needed a timing belt, serpentine belt, and it has alot of electrical problems with the lights but they arent too serious or costly. I dont think its that bad. Well the timing belt was costly but all cars have to have new timing belts at 100k miles anyway so that wasnt out of the ordinary.

The problems are with the wires of the car, and some have dash board problems. The engine and transmissions seem to be good.

It's a Ford! Of course it'll give you problems! Buy Japanese, Toyota or Honda!
