You want to know what happened when I offered four street people (in Cape Town, South Africa) some food?

I bought an entire meal called a "Bunny Chow" - see my 360 page for a picture of this item.

It's a large loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with a stew or manwhich type substance. Pretty filling stuff.

I bought an entire large loaf and gave it to them..

Do you know that they said instead of thank you?

They wanted a Coke to go with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I usually give them a dollar or two when I have it.

Also, there are two men that I see everyday on my way home from work and I was thinking that it would be nice (if I could afford it and I can't) to set them up with an apartment and then help them find jobs. I know it won't be an executive job or anything maybe a maintenance man or a fast food worker some place they could make money and afford to eat and have an apartment. They are friends so they could just get one place and split everything. After a couple months of them working and saving they would be able to afford it on their own. I think it is a good idea but I just don't have the money to do it.

I once offered a man pushing a grocery cart in my neighborhood if he would like me to fix him some sandwich. But he just laughed and said he was not homeless he was just cleaning up the neighborhood; throwing the trash he found into the buggy. He said thanks and that I was a good kid. This happened about 9 years ago. Now when I see someone standing on the side of the road I try not to make eye contact with them. I wonder why they don't try to get a job. They could go clean up at a Salvation Army, and get a fast food, or construction job.

I can't give EVERYONE a dime, and I don't know the whole story of everyone doing the begging.

I'm glad to have helped (directly) some acccomplish goals that made them better off.

I walk past.

Ok, it's not the heroic story you were fishing for, but it's true.
