My dog is 9 years old and just recently, yesterday he had a breathing problems. It looked like an asthma attack (well, I don't really know what those really look like)... and it's scaring me. He didn't choke up anything previous to the 'attacks'. My mom says that it happened a few times before, and she doesn't think it's a problem. Can anyone let me know what could be wrong? Once again, he's 9 years old, relatively healthy for his age: moderately active, eats well, enjoys the company of others, responsive to commands, and very happy.

Thank you in advance for your help! I truly appreciate it!

Thanks for all your input! My mom took him to the vet, and he explained that it was just reverse sneezing, which is harmless. Not to worry about now. Thank you again!!!

Hey...I had a dog that looked like he was having an asthma attack..I took him to the vet and the vet said it was seizure..He said there was nothing you could really do about it just let it happen...he said you could stay near him b/c in some cases the seizure could last for a long time...I'm not sure if that is what your dog has but it sounded familiar...If it is hot he may be getting to hot..Well I hope this helps...SammiJo

My dog has those kind of problems only when he is sleeping, and it does sound a lot like a person having an asthma attack but then he wakes up and nothings wrong, you can always consult any veterinarian about the problem especially if they are random and when the dog is awake. My dog is also 9

I have a Jack Russell. He has had kennel cough for 9 years. when he starts to have an attack , I pet him til it goes away they last a min.or two. He gets shots every 6 mo. that keeps it under control. Also I live in Vegas my dog "Spuds" has a hard time w/ the hot dry weather. Which can trigger a small attack.

I think your mom should make an appointment with the vet. At his age the dog needs to have regular check ups.

Maybe allergies, or sleep apnea. Most smushed-faced breeds have this. These are pugs, bulldogs, etc. the kind with very short noses. Depending on the wieght, give your dog some benadryl, it will not hurt him and may clear up this condition, if it doesnt see your vet.

It could be a sign of an underling condition. Its up to you to have your vet check him out. My dog was having trouble breathing (age 13) and I found out he has a tumor on his liver and his abdomen was filling with fluid and constricting his breathing. It could be age related but only you vet can tell for sure. Good luck!

Hi,,, I hope that I can be wrong on this,, but you have been giving the dog his or her heart worm medicine??? Does it have a cough associated with this...???

Take Rover to the vet and have him-her checked..... and dont be giving them a lot of canned food either... dry is better for the teeth..

good luck.....

It sounds like the condition know as reverse sneezing.. It is common in toy breeds and doxies.

has it been really warm where you live too? one of my dogs doesnt breathe well in the heat.
the other one has these funny asthma like panic attacks, she just does it, the vet checked her out & she's ok... nothing wrong.
i'd take the dog in anyway.
