How much would be required for him to be given a student visa?

It's unlikely he will be allowed in to study without sufficient independent funds to cover his stay (the idea being that if he hasn't got that, he will work illegally) - £1000 ain't gonna be anywhere near enough. So unless he has funding from nigeria, forget it.

The IND require that the person be sponsored to ensure taht they will not be living off the state so to speak. It is generally seen to be more important that you have a steady income and have savings etc than a lump sum. You would need to speak to a lawyer for full details of the application.

Not even close. It will cost many times that to pay for his fees alone.

Work it out. Do your sums. You'll need to include whatever fees his course will charge, plus living expenses for the duration of that course, year by year. Student visas get renewed every year so you'll need to have the costs demonstrable for that year. We can't do those sums for you.

If you're thinking of scholarships, I think the British Council awards scholarships,, but only for postgraduate students. Check out all the funding sources possible and also check out possible scholarships from the university itself. Otherwise, it will be impossible I'm afraid.
