Personally, I feel that oral contraceptives should be available OTC, but with age restrictions. I believe that younger girls (teenagers) would go buy them and use them improperly if an age limit wasn't enforced. However, I'm 29 yrs. of age and I've been taking oral contraceptives for nearly 9 years and I know what works for me, the risks, and etc. So, I believe that older women would use these more reasonably and read the consequences of improperly taking them and abide by the rules. This is why I feel that they should be available OTC but one should show government issued identification and noone should be able to purchase them until they are at least the legal age that one becomes an adult. And proof of an annual exam should be required every year until age 30 or one must attend an information session and bring proof of attendance to the pharmacy and then they can purchase the pill OTC. All others under the legal age of being an adult should have to consult with a physician/gynecologist.

Contraceptives have risks of things like blood clots - they should always be given only with a prescription and after some blood tests.

Needs to be prescribed because there are many different pills. You and your doctor need to communicate with on another to make sure that you are taking the right ones.

rx only, way to many things that need to be monitored to be otc. Without proper guidance STD's would increase because it would lead to more unprotected. (ie sex without a condom.)

They should be prescribed because they may leave some bad effects on you health. The doc sees that this does not happen.
