if you want traditional martial arts, then kyokushin, isshin ryu, muay thai, 8 step praying mantis, shuai jiou and shaolin kung fu (NOT shaolin kenpo) are all good for fighting.
if you want pure sport, then muay thai (it's traditional in the sense that it's old, it's sport in the sense that it is used a lot in sports), kickboxing, judo, shuai jiou, wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, bjj, and san shou (mixed kung fu kickboxing style) are good.

There's no "best" style of martial arts. They all have their strengths & weaknesses. Shop around. Check the phonebook for martial art schools. Visit the schools that interest you.

there are special self defence classes, they are better for you
there you will learn how not to act as a victim (and thus not getting attacked)
for learning a martial art is going to take a lot of time to learn

it depends on what you would prefer, but one thing is that you cant rush any of it, coz when it comes to martial arts its all about control and using the correct techniques, but check out styles such as Thai kick boxing, krav maga are will give you good fight techniques.

for fast results, boxing or kick boxing and add a bit of westling. they would be the fastest to learn, although it takes a while to master.
if you are not going for fast results but a good fighting style, then you'd have to really decide for yourself. That's because all styles have their strength and weakness, from kick boxing to jujitsu to tai chi they all have different out look to fighting and ways of training.

Shotokan Karate! I love it because you learn kick-*** take down moves. When my brother tries to fight me, I can use my defense + take down moves so he doesn't hurt me. Now he doesn't try to fight me. Also, I like this style because it is so elegant, when you get good at it, you'll be sly like a tiger.
