I am going to be honest--the first few days are uncomfortable as your mouth gets used to having stuff where there wasn't stuff before. The braces will rub against the inside of your mouth and it takes a couple of days to get used to this. Use the wax to help make the braces feel smoother against your mouth. Plan on eating foods that you don't have to chew a lot like ice cream, soup, applesauce, yogurt, etc. It will also be a little sore as the teeth first start to move. Again, in a few days you will be used to it and it gets better. This soreness will be repeated--but much less--each time you get them tightened. My orthodontist allowed sugar-free chewing gum. You will have to check with your doctor to see if it is allowed for you. They use a special kind of cement to hold the braces on. Try not to taste the stuff as they put it on--yuk! Anyway, I am soooooo glad I went through the process of getting braces. My teeth will be straight and look really nice forever as long as I remember my retainer! Good Luck!

i just got braces on 2day, and it doesnt hurt at all when the braces are getting put on. the only part that hurts is when he puts the bands (metal rings) on ur molars. he tries different rings on u 2 c what fits best. he cements them onto ur teeth. then he glues the brackets on. (for me, it took 40min.). he puts on the archwire. then he goes over what not 2 eat and how to brush ur teeth... things like that. and ur done.and u cant chew gum or eat any candy.(dont bite into hard candy). as soon as u get home, eat immediately! cuz a few hrs later it will start 2 hurt. few more hrs later, itll start 2 hurt more. after all those hrs u wont be able 2 chew anything...and i mean anything. cuz all my teeth hurt and i cant chew anything even if its soft. it sucks.oh, and remember to clean ur teeth and floss! Good luck!

I had braces twice (one partial set when I was 7 & another full set when I was a teen) and they were unbearable both times. The first few days are the hardest. My mouth throbbed and eating was a bear. You get over it and after a few tightenings (the first few can be a little uncomfortable) you won't even notice anymore. If you had to get spacers- that a good start as to how uncomfortable your mouth will be.
I forgot- both times I had them on for about 1-2 years. Make sure you wear your retainer (if you get one) when they come off otherwise it was a waste (not why I had them twice-- my first dentist was a whack and thought they'd be OK on a 7 year old- we found out he wasn't even allowed to put on braces he was a plain ol' dentist- not an ortho!!)

It's not the most comfortable for the first few days and maybe like the day after you get them tightened in general. It doesn't hurt though. Yes, they glue them to your teeth.

ok for me it kinda did hurt. but more of after you get them, like your teeth get sore and you cant chew anything. um yes iot hurts when they tighten them, not when they actually do it, just after words when you want to chew, and yes they say your not suppose dto chew gum, but go right ahead. i had my braces for two years and i chewed gum like every single day, and it didnt do anything. sometimes it might get suck (very rare for me) but you can just brush it out if anything.
only losers follow the braces rules! the worse that can likely happen is get food stuck in their!
its very very rare that you break the equipment in your mouth.
but the most pain of braces is you get stuff stuck in their all the time-even if you do follow the rules!

Yes they glue them on your teeth, yes it hurts when they're tightened, but when its over you will have a beautiful smile. I only had to have my braces on for 6 months. It really wasn't too bad. You'll survive.
