The paper, published in the Journal of Religion and Society, a US academic journal, reports: “Many Americans agree that their churchgoing nation is an exceptional, God-blessed, shining city on the hill that stands as an impressive example for an increasingly sceptical world.

“In general, higher rates of belief in and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and early adult mortality, STD infection rates, teen pregnancy and abortion in the prosperous democracies.

“The United States is almost always the most dysfunctional of the developing democracies, sometimes spectacularly so.”

ok, so the facts are there. But I don't think it's so much because of faith rather than demographics. Which countries tend to have the higher concentrations of Christians? Developed. These are free nations that do not have "cruel and unusual" punishments for the most part adn people don't their lives fearing the government. Therefore less morality and higher crime occurs (crime can be relative depending on the country and the person's status in that country).

But what about countries where the majority is muslim? There is very little illegal drug use (mainly because some of our illegal drugs are legal there), there is virtually no AIDS (mostly because women are shuned ot killed if they are not virgins at marriage, and being gay is out of the question) because the "fear of God" and nation goes into the citizens which reduces the probability of spread by sexual conact.

So before anyone blames troubles soley on faiths, we need ot consider all the other factors. The culture of a region, the type of government, the stability of family (many regions in Africa have horrible statistics because many places or so chaotic that people do rash things just to survive, and there are hundreds of religions there).

I think that children who are brought up to believed in religion usually are good children, until when they are mature enough to make their own decision and chose not to believe or chose something that is against the common law in that religion; that they they are told that they are not welcome in the family or that they are banished from the family or an embarrassment to the family.
Religion it self has nothing to do with high mortality rates, it is the human being that is the source of all things that is bad.
For instance a child brought up in Christianity came out to his or her parents about the child being gay and the parents says, "you are not welcomed in this family or the community any more because you have embarrassed the family name and the community." Then the child commit ed suicide, even though there is nothing wrong or change about the child.
Or the child have a premarital sex and got pregnant, and then was told never to have to come back home again.
So, like I was saying, the whole thing about religion being bad is not the religion it self, but it is the believers them self.

Actually other articles point to a lack of sex education leading to higher STD rates, teen pregnancies, and yes even abortions. The lack of sex ed comes from the fact that many Christians are against teaching anything other than abstinence.

I didn't see any validated proof of these claims --
I have worked in the health care system for more than 10 years and the vast majority of people I took care of weren't even Christian --- (and that's pretty amazing since I lived in the bible belt ---NC)
The learned men who wrote the article don't even respect God - why would they write a glowing review of Christianity? Nor did I see anything that mention a mass out pouring of people moving out of the US --- I wonder why???

you can make the figures say whatever you want them to. if you are looking for mistakes made, you will find them. religions are made up of people, who are fallible. that is why we need God's grace and forgiveness. we should try to be good examples, but no one is perfect. it does not surprise me that most Christians are or were sinners. they need help the most. and now the fact that they try to improve themselves via a personal spiritual relationship makes for good ammunition against them? would you rather that people who make mistakes have absolutely no faith or hope whatsoever?

also, people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
