Phuket itself is very commercial and touristy, kind of like Coney Island. If you really want to see the beauty of coastal Thailand and relax, it is better to spend most of your time on the smaller and quieter islands near Phuket, like Koh Phi Phi, Krabi and the Semilan Islands. There are day trips by boat that will get you there. Fabulous beaches, amazing culture (ever seen a fishing village built entirely on stilts over the ocean?) incredible diving.

Just be prepared to honor Muslim culture in the less populated outer islands (throw at least one long sleeved cotton shirt and lightweight pair of long pants into your suitcase), be sure you dive with an experienced local dive master (LOTS of very poisonous critters in Thai waters) and watch out for pirates (yes, really! but not as bad as farther south off coastal Malaysia). I envy you... enjoy!

The beach is wonderful there. Go around the place, don't stay in one place. You can go island hopping around, even stay in some of them. You can make enquiries at the pier if you want.

Phuket is also the launching site to Phang-nga and Krabi. More beach resorts to stay in at these places.

Also around Phuket town, there are various theme parks available for visits, if you tire of the beach. You can always pick up a brochure to see what is on hand. Try a Tiffany show, it is fun and entertaining. There will be much to see like Phuket Fantasea and Cultural Village.

Have fun.

- Racha( Raya) island : 30 minutes from Phuket by speedboat. A great place for snorkeling and ralaxing on the white sandy beach.
*Booking can be made at your hotel tour desk

- Phuket Fantasea : The ultimate show with dinner
- Simon Cabaret : Cabaret show by Thai Ladyboy

Look for Buddhist temples and monasteries. Find out what Thailand has done to memorialize the terror of the tsunami.
