iPods in BMWs, how to shuffle?

I am trying to get my iPod to shuffle songs, but when I connect my iPod to the dohickey in my BMW the shuffle option discontinues and it just starts playing complete albums.

My iPod is connected through the glove compartment and is controlled by the car stereo.

Before I can intelligently answer your question i need to know is you Ipod directly connected thru your BMW ( you use your factory radio to control it ? ) or are you using a wireless device to feed the signal to the radio.
