Same reason you mom used to ask you "Where have you been?! Did you go to the park with your friends?" etc, etc, etc...

he wants to know what you've been up to, where you've been to, who youmped into and use the sniffing same way as a husband would ask you "And where have been today". My two dogs are the same if my male dog is ten times worse at it! And when i come home carrying doggy smells on my person (I work with dogs) his eyes look rather dismayed then he sulks for a few minutes thinking i've been unfaithful to him! Dogs olfactory sense is far more developed than ours! A male can smell a b**** in heat 3 miles away so you can imagine what your smell tells him!

A dog's sense of smell is so good that he/she can tell everywhere you've been the whole day just by scent. It is a bit like you sitting down and telling someone everything you did that day. Also, he/she is just happy to see you and the sniffing is a part of that. It is so lovely the way they are so happy to see you, even if you only go out for a short while - I miss having a dog!

What you need to understand is the dog "sees" through it's nose. From all the different smells you've picked up during the day, the dog is creating a "scenario in it's mind" for how you got it...or detecting that you've been somewhere totally new today, hmmm never smelled that one before! Woo, like that! Yikes, is there more? hahaha really that is pretty much dog behaviour at it's best! If you deflect that response with a hearty welcome it will forget all the smelling and enjoy you more.

They do that to see what you've been doing. Did you have icecream on the way home without me, have you been seeing another dog, did you really go to work or were you at the park? All things it finds out from sniffing you. Don't we wish that worked for boyfriends.

He wants to know where you've been, what you've been up to and who you met. He's smelling things on you that a human being would have no hope of ever detecting. When I come home, my two scent-hounds give me a serious once-over. No playing can happen until they've thoroughly checked me out!

That is his way of recognizing you and what you have been up to. When I came back from the animal shelter where I had been holding a very small dog, my dog sniffed extensively the place where the dog had touched my clothing.

Your dog is living vicariously though the smells you've collected through the day. In that a dog's sense of smell is so discerning, he or she can smell your place of work, your lunch, your friends, and your journey from the time you left the house.
Good luck with your buddy! :)

Because your dog wants to know where you have been via the scents he picks up from you, presumably it,s when you have your clothes on - If not thats a different matter all together - happy sniffing

my dogs do the same thing. they are simply trying to figure out where you have been or who you have seen. they find the smells out side of your household exciting. if you take the dog on walks then there is a chance she will tone it down a little. because s/he will be more used to outside smells.
