1st Timer. Well I already posted this to somebody else, but this is my walking tour itinerary. I think it's a good 1st day thing to do and cuts out tons of sites all in one walk.

Here is my walking tour.
1) Get to 34th Street and 5th Ave. That is where the Empire State Building is. Go to the top and see it.
2) Then walk west down 34th Street until you see Broadway and Macy's. See Macy's, it's the biggest department store in the world. But don't buy anything or too much because you're going to be walking all day!
3) Then walk up Broadway to 42nd Street where Times Square begins. Keep walking north through Times Square and see all of the crazy stores there.
4) Walk East (take a right) on 50th Street and see Rockefeller Center between 6th and 5th Ave. You'll also pass NBC studios. You can do the tour there too if you like.
5) On 5th Avenue see St. Patrick's Cathedral.
6) Now either walk north on 5th Avenue to see some extraordinary shopping and then ultimately Central Park (but I think Central Park requires a whole entire day, don't miss it! Do it after seeing the American Museum of Natural History, or if you like art better, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both border Central Park), so go south down 5th Avenue, see the NYC Public Library (which is really a museum at 42nd Street.
7) Walk East on 42nd Street and see Grand Central Station.

From there you can do whatever you want!

I would have to say, DO NOT eat at your familiar chain restaurant, since NYC has SO many incredible restaurants!

For your 1st time I'd also stick to Manhattan and skip the Queens, Bronx, and Brooklyn sites, just because you can do those on your next trip and require some traveling that is not too complicated, but can be.

Oh man, there is so much to do and see in NYC. You have to take the ferry to Staten Island...it takes you pretty close to the Statue of Liberty. You can go to Ellis Island and see the Statue of Liberty up close.

The last time I was there my husband and I did a 9 hour walk from the Wall Street subway station, saw Ground Zero, walked down to Battery Park (which is an experience in itself) and then walked up Broadway to Union Square.

You can go shopping in SoHo, see Grand Central Station. Go up the Empire State Building, see Times Square. We walked most of the way through Central Park too, which is beautiful. There is the Museum of Natural History, the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum. See a show on Broadway...there is a place in Times Square called TKTS that sells tickets pretty cheap.

You can take a helicopter ride over the city, there are all kinds of bus tours that leave from Times Square. Go to Yankee Stadium. See the Brooklyn Bridge.

The one thing you have to, have to do is go to the Carnegie Deli for a meal and their cheesecake! But don't eat any other meal before you go there because their portions are huge!
