If you have a clear understanding of pigment combinations you can get by with just Red, Blue, Yellow, Black and White.

To oil paint cheaply: Mix the oil paint with some linseed oil until it gets about the consistency of runny toothpaste or spaghetti sauce.
Make sure you don't mix your brushes with the Acrylic.
You can oil paint on just about any surface, but make sure you leave plenty of time for it to dry.

The important stuff you need a turpentine and linseed oil, they are needed to mix together so they have to be mixed with the paint on paint brush to give a good effect of a painting. Turpentine are needed to wash away the paint on paint brush. Buy a bottle of turpentine, it doesn't cost much if you use normal ones. Best to buy canvas pad first before you stretch it when you have enough money.

1. gesso, if you buy it by the gallon it's cheaper (you can get good quality gesso in the gallon size for 19.99 at Utrecht.com, or in their stores)
2. odorless paint thinner and glass jars, i use jelly/jam jars, once i finish the jelly
3. linquin...it allows you to make glazes, and also helps in blending
4. you can make any color with only red, yellow, blue, black, and white...no need to buy pre-mixed greens and such (the cadmium colors will be more expensive, such as red and blue, but you need them)...don't buy Hues!!! they don't mix well
5. go to a lumber yard and buy MDF, you only need about 1/4 thick, and you can buy in in 4ft by 6ft pieces (they can cut it down for you), or buy canvas buy the roll (cheaper in larger quantities) and make your own stretchers

hope this was helpful =)
