A competition is any struggle to be recognized as being superior to another in some way, usually for some final reward.

A contest is a more organized competition, in which a specific skill or trait is being evaluated.

A tournament is an even more organized contest, wherein a number of participants are being evaluated with very specific criteria to be met, often broken into rounds of elimination until a singular victor emerges as superior.

Competition is generic and could be unstated (like competing with a elementary school mate, competing for attention among others).

Contest is a limited form of competition where a set of people compete within a framework of rules and one or more of them are judged winners (like a Essay Contest, Sweepstakes etc.)

A Tournament is a limited and more structured form of contest where the participants (individually or as a team) progress through stages and one individual or team emerge winner.
