I think that just about anything that you do that step towards learning Japanese is better than not. So, if you find a book and it is cheap - I always buy it and usually I learn something. I have a group site where you can share and pick up tips and things on learning Japanese. You are welcome to join if you like. Not very busy now only four members. If you have specific question I can help to answer... this question is very general, you know. What have you done so far? What words do you know can you write any Japanese? and so on. My advice on that is as you begin to learn at the same time to learn hiragana ... do you know what that is?

The BBC did a good video course called 'Japanese Language and People' which I found very useful at the start. The coursebook 'Teach Yourself Japanese' with CD was also easy to use. Good luck!

The way I learned what little Japanese I know is by hanging around with two of my best friends, who watch anime all the time on Japanese, with English subtitles. Also, with the couple of little "crazy rules" they taught me, I found a few websites with Japanese words written in English, and pronounced them on my own, hopefully coming close.

Best of luck for you!

everyone learns in a different way, but my friend used "Japanese for Busy People" which fits your problem "busy" to the word. I havent really looked through the book personally, so cant recommend it or whatever, but check it out. (two versions, one in japanese "kana" native alphabet and other in english-like letters called romaji)

try it out if you want.

you may initiate via staring at eastern anime or dramas as that relatively helped me understand and study greater vocabularies. After which you would be able to study hiragana and katakana. Kanji could be easier for you considering you learnt mandarin in the previous. in case you have an android telephone or a cellular telephone, get carry of the app "imiwa". Its relatively useful!

Try www.rosettastone.com. Use their online trials to sample the methodology. It's a very sound program, but will take a lot of time. On the plus side, it seems almost like a game to me.
