I have a relative who needs rides because he can't drive for 6 months because of medical reasons. He never offers to help pay for gas. Should I ask him for a few bucks?

Yeah, I think you should. Be sure to mention that you don't mind helping him out and helping him get around, but your time is valuable and gas is a big expense right now. So would you mind contributing something? Let him volunteer what he thinks is a good amount and then work it out from there, if you need more than he offers, be honest about it. Unless you wanna pay for all his travel expenses for the next 6 mos.

YES you should. And if it is becoming a financial burden you can't afford than let him know you can't give him rides anymore. He can't use and abuse your kindness. You are already going out of the way to help him out, the least he can do is pay you for your trouble. Alot of people don't even talk to their relatives, he is lucky to have you and needs to appreciate it. If you have to ask this question that means it bothers you, and so you definately should ask.

YES....he should be willing to pay for the gas! Don't let him take advantage of you, just tell him: Gas is expensive and I can't keep filling up the tank for you. Not only are you using your money for gas, but your time to take him to the doctor. Ask and if he doesn't want to pay for it, he can get another ride.

I think he should pay for part of it. The price of gas is so high he should . If not unless you want a problem with him I would go ahead and give him rides due to him being family. I had to do this for my sister, but she always pitched in for gas.

If you're only giving him short rides, once in a while, that's one thing. If you're giving him rides on a regular basis, or they're pretty far, he should absolutely be helping to pay for gas.

Yes, I don't see why not. Since he would have to pay either a cab or busfare if he didn't hitch a ride with you.

its rude that he hasnt offered. if the places you take him are out of your way, theres nothing wrong with asking. also the next tiime you fill up, do it with him in the car.
