Railroad tracks are steel with a medium carbon content (so that they don't deform under the weight of the trains).

Railroad rails contain about 0.60% carbon.

Yes a medium carbon content is desirable, because if you have too much carbon the track even though hard will be too brittle and the large vibrations from trains will eventually crack the rail. Too little carbon and the track will deform under the weight.
