Don't encourage him in any way. Next time he calls, tell him: from now on, I'm not taking your calls. And you can change your phone number. He can't cling if you don't let him or give him a reason to cling. Don't try to be 'best friends'...that's alot of crap. Just let him know that it's over...and then act like it's over. He'll stop bugging you when you completely cut off any hope of reconciliation.
