Well, it's an 8-channel digital recorder, with a input frequencies up to 20 KHz. It records sound in digital format. It also has an optional interface to a PC so that you can transfer the digital sound straight to your PC.

I've seen websites where they are used for anything from recording underwater sounds, to recording sounds to make sure that noise levels don't rise too high - anything you want to record and later analyze. It's made more for a lab than a recording studio or something. They are also really expensive.
