Why do you need to?
Is she just singing around the house? Then she's doing it for her enjoyment and who cares what she sounds like.

If she's planning to sing for others, and you're afraid she might get embarrassed by their reaction, why don't you suggest she train a bit, and record her voice for her. When she hears it she might get the idea.

This is an important question, and here's why...a young person's self-image and self-esteem are at stake.
As you watch auditions for shows like "American Idol' and "The One: Making a Music Star", etc. it is so sad to see young people with high aspirations that actually have little or no singing talent or stage presence whatsoever.
You actually wonder in amazement how they got that far.
These are individuals who have been held from the truth to spare their feelings. They have been encouraged all through their young lives with "hey, you sound great!", and, "you're gonna be a star", when the fact of the matter is they sound as average as you or I singing in the shower.

I concur with another suggestion to record your sister while she is "performing" and let her hear it for herself. If she is realistic and honest with herself, she will not need to be told she "stinks".
If she really sounds as off key as you imply, she needs to face the fact that a singing career is not for everyone and only a few ever reach that lofty goal.

Now, on the other hand...if sibling jealousy is the case here and your sister perhaps has a hint of talent, you should encourage her because she is only 12 and her body is still maturing. It might be possible that over time, her voice may also mature to a level where it could be trained to actually be able to carry notes and sound good.
Bottom line: be truthful and honest in your evaluation of your sister.

word it like this... "Personally, I like your voice, but remember, there are alot of people out there with better singing voices than you.", or sing a few songs with her for fun, and joking around say "WOW, we stink!" (even if you have a good voice!)
As for not telling her because it doesn't hurt anyone... hahahaha has anyone seen American Idol? Hello!? The terrible ones always have their parents and siblings there saying how good they are, just to get trashed on tv. where would you rather find out? at home or in front of the public?

hi Maria, Im so sorry that you're having to address this all by technique of your self. i will not imagine the way you need to be feeling. I anticipate your sister is going to comprehend quite immediately that some thing poor has occurred, so there isnt a lot you should do except tell her and hug her even as you do. i'm hoping your older brother is a minimum of going to be there with you once you try this. The human mind places your body right into a state of marvel even as such issues as this ensue and it truly is plausible to experience surprisingly calm even once you get the most dreadful information. Its to cushion you somewhat even as you go back to words with what has occurred. purely attempt to be there on your sister and that i'm hoping your dad or another adult relative is with you very quickly because it truly is lots so that you could deal with on my own. wide hugs to you .

Keep it to yourself. If she likes to sing and she's enjoying it, why do you want to spoil the moment. You might make her so self-conscious that she'll remember that the rest of her life and will never enjoy singing again. Please encourage her. Maybe practice with her in a duet or encourage her to join a choir. That way she can learn the right way and get some practice. Good Luck.

Don't tell her something like that. It is very mean and will only hurt her feelings. Everyone's voice is different and not everyone can sing very well.

Dont, just let her be if it makes her happy. She would never forget it, and what a fragile age for self esteem. Its not about whether or not she is really good at it, it's about how she feel about herself.

Every time she starts singing complain about your ears ringing, or every once in a while grab your ear and cringe, but ONLY when she's singing. :-D
